Arafat Fisks Bin Laden? What the...
The Times of India , and Fox News, both carried this London Times story over the weekend: The embattled Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat has accused Osama Bin Laden and al-Qaeda of exploiting the Palestinian struggle to win worldwide Muslim sympathy. Arafat's powerful and brutally frank attack on al-Qaeda is seen as a desperate attempt to publicly distance the struggle for Palestinian statehood from the wider US-led war against Bin Laden. ...I'm telling him [bin Laden] directly not to hide behind the Palestinian cause," Arafat said in an interview published in the London Sunday Times. Bin Laden "never helped us, he was working in another completely different area and against our interests," Arafat said. Yasser really hates not being the center of attention 100% of the time.

Yasser Arafat was born on August 24, 1929 in Cairo, Egypt. His full name is: Mohammed Abad Arouf Arafat. He studied civil engineering at Cairo University.
In 1952-56 he was president of the League of Palestinian Students. Formed, with others, Al Fatah movement in 1956.
Lived in Kuwait 1957-65.
Arafat was one of the first Palestinians to advocate the use of terror activities against Israel. He was elected chairman of the PLO in 1968 and in 1971 was appointed general commander of the Palestinian Revolution Forces. He addressed the United Nations General Assembly in 1974, on behalf of the PLO, and was the first representative of a non-governmental organization to appear before it. His appearance at the United Nations while packing a pistol on his hip startled the international community, but did not hurt his group as they achieved official recognition at the world body. In 1988 he recognized the state of Israel. Arafat has had a long career as the principal architect of terror against Israel and its holdings around the world.

THE NOBEL AFTER ARAFAT
Author: By Jeff Jacoby, Globe Staff Date: Thursday, December 8, 1994

OP-ED PAGE Kare Kristiansen hasn't had new business cards printed yet, so he gave me one of his old ones. "Komitemedlem," it says. "Den Norske Nobelkomite." Member of the Norwegian Nobel Committee. He was, but he's not anymore. On Oct. 14, the day the committee announced that the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize would be shared by Yasser Arafat, Shimon Peres and Yitzhak Rabin, Kristiansen announced his resignation. By his lights, honoring Arafat a 30-year terrorist, a killer of civilians as a Nobel peace laureate would be a reckless moral error. Norwegian law requires that decisions of the committee be unanimous, and Kristiansen could not stifle his objections. And so, he said a bit wistfully in Boston last week, "I had to leave the most interesting and important committee I had ever been a member of." He has been a member of many. At 74, Kristiansen is one of Norway's elder statesmen, a longtime leader of its small Christian Democratic Party. He has been a Cabinet minister and a member of Parliament; he reached the pinnacle of his legislative career in 1986, when he was chosen speaker of the Odelsting, the Norwegian House of Commons.

For two decades the PLO launched bloody attacks on Israel, and Arafat gained a reputation as a ruthless terrorist. But by 1988, when he told the United Nations that the PLO would recognize Israel as a sovereign state, Arafat had warmed to diplomacy. Then in 1993, the unthinkable happened. The terrorist leader, who had rarely been seen without his signature ghutra and scruffy beard, met with his avowed enemies. The secret peace talks in Norway led to the Oslo Peace Accords with Israeli Prime Minister Yitzak Rabin. The agreement granted limited Palestinian self-rule and earned Arafat, Rabin and Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize. In January 1996 Arafat was elected the first president of the Palestinian Council governing the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
Yasser Arafat was born in 1929 in Jerusalem. His full name is Mohammed Abad Arouf Arafat. He studied civil engineering at Cairo University.

Palestinian President Yasser Arafat Yasser Arafat's goal has been to lead the Palestinian people to independence. In the 1960s and 70s, this meant heading the Palestinian Liberation Organization, which committed many acts of violence against the Israeli state. Over the years, his focus shifted from military to diplomatic efforts to achieve his goal and in 1994, he shared the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts. Two years later, he was overwhelmingly elected president of the Palestinian areas of the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Yasser Arafat continued: Mohammed Yasser Abdul-Ra'ouf Qudwa Al-Husseini was born August 24, 1929 to a religious mother and a successful merchant father. His birthplace is debated, with Arafat stating he was born in Jerusalem, while others claim he was born in Egypt. Arafat's mother died when he was four years old, and some claim that he was sent to Jerusalem to live with his aunt and uncle, beginning a deep bond with the land that was to become part of Israel. Later while a student of civil engineering at Cairo University in the late 1940s, he led the Palestinian Students League.

Since there is no biographical description of yasser arafat in LesPrix nobel for 1994, this account was written by the editor.

Arafat, Yasser Mohammed Abdel-Raouf Arafat As Qudwa al-Hussaeini was born on 24 August 1929 in Cairo, his father a textile merchant who was a Palestinian with some Egyptian ancestry, his mother from an old Palestinian family in Jerusalem. She died when Yasir, as he was called, was five years old, and he was sent to live with his maternal uncle in Jerusalem, the capital of Palestine, then under British rule, which the Palestinians were opposing. He has revealed little about his childhood, but one of his earliest memories is of British soldiers breaking into his uncle's house after midnight, beating members of the family and smashing furniture.
After four years in Jerusalem, his father brought him back to Cairo, where an older sister took care of him and his siblings. Arafat never mentions his father, who was not close to his children. Arafat did not attend his father's funeral in 1952.
In Cairo, before he was seventeen Arafat was smuggling arms to Palestine to be used against the British and the Jews. At nineteen, during the war between the Jews and the Arab states, Arafat left his studies at the University of Faud I (later Cairo University) to fight against the Jews in the Gaza area. The defeat of the Arabs and the establishment of the state of Israel left him in such despair that he applied for a visa to study at the University of Texas. Recovering his spirits and retaining his dream of an independent Palestinian homeland, he returned to Faud University to major in engineering but spent most of his time as leader of the Palestinian students.

YASSER ARAFAT Yasir Arafat, born in Jerusalem in 1929, is the President of Palestinian National Authority ( PNA ), which controls the Palestinian territories in Gaza and on the West Bank since January 1996,and Chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) since 1968. A native of Palestine, Arafat emigrated to Egypt after loosing Palestine land and the establishment of Israel in 1948. In 1958, he left Egypt to Kuwait where he worked as an engineer and met with Khalil Al Wazeer (Abu Jihad). In Kuwait, he discussed the idea of establishing "Fateh" the Palestinian National Liberation Movement. After then Arafat returned to Palestine where he met with a group of Palestinian activists and founded Fateh Movement which launched its first operation on the 1st of January 1965 and Arafat became the head of the movement. Arafat stayed in Jerusalem until 1967, then he left to Jordan. He secretly returned to Palestine 3 times. He led Al-Karamah battle in 1968 with his Palestinian colleagues in Fateh where the Palestinian resistance won the battle against the Israelis.
Yasser Arafat
International Profile Arafat's international profile has changed during the last 30 years. He was during the 60s seen upon as warrior for freedom to liberate the land of Palestine and the Palestinian people from the Israeli's occupation. In the 70s the international society came to regard him as being a politician without country, but still connected to the activities performed in the 60s. In the 80s, Arafat started to gain more important support in the West, much because of understanding the Palestinian problem and increasingly savage policies from Israel's side (attacks at Lebanon, massacres in Sabra and Chatila), but basically because of a change of politics (more talks, less action). In the 90s Arafat has come to be considered a pragmatic moderate, and by many as a wiser politician than his Israeli opponents. Few question Arafat's intentions in the peace process, but there is more uncertainty on will to peace with his opponents'.

Friends, I don't know how much good internet petitions do. Certainly, checking their veracity is difficult. But this is one some of you may be interested in. Given the pretty clear evidence of Yasser Arafat's continued support of terrorist violence against Israel (this is not a pro/con discussion on the merits of Israel/Palastinian actions or statehood), there is a petition circulating for the revokation of Arafat's Nobel Peace Prize. If you are interested in signing, along with over 1,200,000 others, the site is www.revoketheprize.org. Johanna

Revoke the Prize Claim: The collection of a million signatures on a petition will spur the Nobel Foundation into revoking the portion of the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat. Status: False. Example: [Collected on the Internet, 2001]
It has been seven years since Yasser Arafat received the Nobel Peace Prize and in that time it has become abundantly clear that Mr. Arafat is far from the peacemaker that the world believed he would be. Israel made a fair, good faith offer to Mr. Arafat for a peaceful solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict; rather than accepting or making a counteroffer, Mr. Arafat answered with violence. His constant pledge to achieve a Peace of the Brave has proven to be mere words, belied by his failure and unwillingness to take a public stance against organizations committed to acts of terror. There are 1 million signatures needed to cancel Arafat's Nobel Prize for Peace. Please sign and forward this message to all your friends. www.RevokeThePrize.org Origins: Important points to consider are:
  • Collecting one million signatures on this petition will not necessarily cause the Nobel Foundation to take any particular course of action. Those who are sponsoring the petition
