Reflections on Camp David 2000

Ever since Israel was reborn into the community of nations in 1948, the world has been overcome with a perplexity about her arrival, and burdened with an anxious consternation about her geographical existence in the Middle East. Finally, after decades of postulating about a process to establish peace in the Middle East, the United States compelled upon Israel to enter into the Oslo Peace Process. That seven year long process eventually brought Israel back to Camp David (Israel first signed a peace treaty with Egypt at Camp David-1979) for Final Status negotiations regarding the issue of sovereignty over the city of Jerusalem. The Israeli Prime Minister at Camp David II, Ehud Barak came to the talks prepared to offer PLO leader Yasser Arafat an unprecedented, and an unimaginable diplomatic gesture in the name of peace.
Barak was willing to concede the entire West Bank, with East Jerusalem to Yasser Arafat as the basis for the establishment of a new political State called Palestine. The only prerequisite that Israel demanded of Yasser Arafat, was that he sign and “ end of conflict” clause addendum in the final peace draft.

YASSER ARAFAT: PROFILE 5 July 8.30pm-9pm; rpt Monday 8 July 11.30pm-midnight 2002 In 1953, Yasser Arafat sent a letter to an Egyptian leader. It was three words long and said to have been written in the Palestinian's own blood. It said simply, "Don't forget Palestine." Reversing "the catastrophe" In the half century since, it has been impossible to ignore either the letter's writer or its contents. While the Middle East conflict continues to rage, for his supporters and critics alike, Yasser Arafat has come to embody his people's struggle for self-determination. Arafat was born and educated in Egypt, but he has always been wedded to his adopted country's cause. He took the name Yasser, believed to honour an Arab victim of the British mandate in Palestine. After the 1948 establishment of the state of Israel, he became committed to the idea of armed struggle to reverse what Palestinians call the Nabka ("the catastrophe"). Militant resistance To this end, Arafat secretly founded Fatah, the Movement for the Liberation of Palestine. He claimed to have fought for Egypt during the Suez crisis and the following Arab-Israeli war. Certainly, his expertise in explosives and demolition held him in good stead as Fatah's operations grew increasingly military.

U.S. Jews try to void Nobel Prize for Arafat
MICHELLE DARDASHTI Jewish Telegraphic Agency NEW YORK Frustrated by what they consider Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat's renewed embrace of violence, a group of young American Jewish professionals has launched an Internet petition to revoke Arafat's Nobel Peace Prize. Located at www.revoketheprize.org , the petition asks "all people of morality and good faith to stand up and express their anger and disappointment in Mr. Arafat by calling for the revocation of his Nobel Peace Prize." One of the organizers, Mark Semer, said the petition, which has been on the Web since the end of June, has almost 10,000 signatures. "We believe that the peace prize gives Arafat legitimacy as a peacemaker that he does not deserve," Semer said, adding that the site is not affiliated with any political organization or religious movement. The desire to strip Arafat of his Nobel was born almost as soon as he received it. Together with Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Foreign Minister Shimon Peres, Arafat received the peace prize in December 1994, a year after he agreed to renounce decades of violent opposition to the state of Israel and resolve Israeli-Palestinian differences peacefully. The decision to reward Arafat was harshly criticized in the Jewish community and beyond. One member of the Nobel Prize committee even resigned in protest.

We are posing this question to you, but we are trying to aim it at the only man from whom we want an answer: Shimon Peres! Psychologists endlessly argue about what motivates the seeker for public office. Is it compassion for others or is it attention for himself? Nobody has given his country more attention than Shimon Peres and nobody doubts that his struggle for peace always came first but nobody could doubt that his struggle for stardom always came a very close second. His elegant enunciation, picture perfect posture, individually placed hair, just polished nails, and micromanaged matching ties to the precisely measured collar are all such a rich, urgent, and beautiful part of his personality. If they were casting in Hollywood for the part of a president of any country in the world, it would be impossible to compete with him for the job.

Yasser Arafat President of Palestinian Council
YASSER ARAFAT came before the U.N. General Assembly in 1972 with an olive branch and a gun. The symbolic juxtaposition of peace and violence defines Arafat’s political life. Although he has remained true to his goal of reestablishing a Palestinian homeland, his methods have softened with time.
Arafat was born in 1929 to a successful merchant father and a religiously devoted mother. His birth name was Mohammed, but he was quickly nicknamed Yasser, which means “easy.” Arafat’s mother died when he was 4, and his father sent him to live with a married uncle in Jerusalem. As a teenager in the 1940s, Arafat became involved in the Palestinian cause. Before the Arabs were defeated by Israel in 1948, Arafat was a leader in the Palestinian effort to smuggle arms into the territory.
Arafat, on the signing of an accord in September 1995 to extend Palestinian rule in the West Bank
After the war, Arafat studied civil engineering at the University of Cairo. He headed the Palestinian Students League and, by the time he graduated, was committed to forming a group that would free Palestine from Israeli occupation. In 1956 he founded Al Fatah, an underground terrorist organization. At first Al Fatah was ignored by larger Arab nations such as Egypt, Syria, and Jordan, which had formed their own group — the Palestine Liberation Organization. It wasn’t until the 1967 Arab-Israeli War, when the Arabs lost the Gaza Strip, Golan Heights and West Bank, that Arab nations turned to Arafat. In 1968 he became the leader of the PLO.

"Estamos a sofrer. Sem lar. Sem Estado. Refugiados em situações dramáticas. Quem é que pode aceitar isto a nível internacional? (...) Nós somos o único povo no mundo inteiro que vive sob uma ocupação" , refere o líder da Autoridade Palestiniana que, no entanto, não deixa de acreditar no dia em que o seu povo poderá ter um Estado e viver em paz.

Yasser Arafat
Lisa Khoo, CBC News Online
December 2001
Yasser Arafat has become the symbol and architect of the Palestinian people's struggle for statehood. Propelled by a fierce determination and a single-minded sense of purpose, he is the only leader many Palestinians have ever known during their time in exile. A childhood under occupation Born in 1929 in Cairo or Jerusalem, according to conflicting reports given by him, Mohammed Abdel-Raouf Arafat al Qudwa al-Hussaeini was nicknamed Yasser, which means "easygoing" in Arabic. His father was a successful Palestinian merchant with Egyptian roots. When Arafat was five years old his mother died and he was sent to live with his relatives in Jerusalem. The city had been placed under British rule by the League of Nations following the First World War. There, the young Arafat witnessed firsthand the conflicts between local Arabs and Jews who were moving into the city hoping to set up a Jewish homeland. Arafat has revealed few details of his early life, but has said that one of his earliest memories is of British soldiers beating his family after breaking into the house after midnight. Reports say that after four years in Jerusalem he was sent to Cairo, where an elder sister took care of him and his siblings. Biographers say Arafat's father was not close to the children. They say Arafat never mentions him and did not attend his funeral in 1952.

Yasser Arafat
Yasser Arafat's life has been the subject of numerous books and articles, and some of the most basic information such as the date and place of birth have been in dispute. For example, French biographers, Christophe Boltanski and Jihan El-Tahri revealed in their 1997 book, Les sept vies de Yasser Arafat , that Arafat was born on August 4, 1929, in Cairo, Egypt, not Palestine. The following is excerpted from the Palestinian Authority's Ministry of Information bio. Mohammed Yasser Abdul-Ra'ouf Qudwa Al-Husseini, more commonly known as Yasser Arafat was born August 24, 1929, in the Gaza Strip. Arafat attended King Fuad University in Egypt where he received a Bachelor Degree in Architecture Engineering in 1951. Arafat was elected as Chairman for the Executive Committee of the PLO in 1969 to be the third chairman after Ash-Shuqiri and Yahya Hamoda. He still retains that title. In the aftermath of the September 1969 war in Jordan, he moved [the Palestinians who threatened King Hussein's regime were actually driven out] to Lebanon and remained there until 1982 when Beirut was under siege for three months by the Israeli army . After that he left Beirut to Tunisia. In 1987, the Palestinian
