III. Alfred Nobel And The Nobel Prizes Alfred Nobel is the man who invented dynamite. He is better known today, however, as the man who established some of the most prestigious prizes in the world. Born in 1833 in Stockholm, Sweden, Nobel from his youth had a dream of inventing an explosive so devastating it would deter humans from making war. Instead, his invention made war easier. Though he was a Swede by birth, he was very much an international man, being educated in St. Petersburg, Russia, where his family moved when he was a child. In St. Petersburg, he studied with private tutors, particularly showing interest in chemistry and languages. He mastered Swedish, Russian, English, French, and German. At the age of 17 he began two years of educational travel throughout Germany, France, Italy and to the United States. Then at the age of 19 he became a chemist, working with his father in St. Petersburg. The family returned to Sweden and in 1863 he was a chemist in his father's explosives factory at Heleneborg near Stockholm. In 1864 Nobel received a patent covering detonating charges and percussion caps. Called "The Nobel Igniter," it was to be called at a later time "the greatest discovery ever made in both the principle and practice of explosives." His 1866 invention of dynamite revolutionized mining, road building and tunnel blasting. In 1875 a later improvement was patented as blasting gelatine. In 1887 he patented ballistite, the first of the nitroglycerine smokeless powders. This was to serve as the basis for cordite which was eventually to change the use of firearms.

Klas Pontus Arnoldson - Sveriges förste nobelpristagare i fred 1908 Av Leif Magnusson I

The Nobel Peace Prize for 1908
Speech , Chairman of the Nobel Committee
On behalf of the Nobel Committee of the Norwegian Parliament, I have the honor to extend a welcome to all who have assembled here on this occasion commemorating the great Swedish patron and benefactor, Alfred Nobel , who gave the whole of his large fortune to the solution of problems concerning the future fate of mankind. Since we last met here, one of the winners of the Peace Prize, Randal Cremer , has left us forever ; but he has left behind the memory of a great personality and of a warm friend of peace and of mankind. I invite you all to honor his memory by standing.
This year the Nobel Committee has unanimously decided to divide the Peace Prize between former member of the Swedish Parliament, K. P. Arnoldson, and former member of the Danish Parliament, Fredrik Bajer.
It is a great pleasure for the Committee to award the prize to these gentlemen, since it is convinced that its choice accords with the general desire in the Scandinavian countries. They have both been untiring advocates of the ideals of peace.
K. P. Arnoldson was born in Gothenburg in 1844 and in his youth was in the service of the Swedish Railways. At the same time, however, he also worked for the press as a journalist and author, one of his favorite subjects even then being the cause of peace. From 1882 to 1887 Arnoldson was a member of the Lower House of the Swedish Parliament. In 1883 he put forward a proposal for an address to the king, petitioning for a declaration of permanent neutrality by Sweden. The proposal was not adopted, but the House recommended that the government should continue to work along the lines of the proposal. In the same year Arnoldson helped to found the

KLAS PONTUS ARNOLDSON
Klas Pontus Arnoldson
During these years, Arnoldson continued his studies, reading widely in history, religion, and philosophy; observed the political events of his day, especially the Danish-Austrian-Prussian War of 1864 and the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871; and evolved the ideas on religion, politics, and peace that he developed in detail in his voluminous writings.
Arnoldson was a liberal in theology. Familiar with the humanistic tenets of religious movements originating in the nineteenth century in Great Britain and in the New England section of the United States, he decried fanatic dogmatism and espoused essentially Unitarian views on truth, tolerance, freedom of the individual conscience, freedom of thought, and human perfectability. These views he published in the Nordiska Dagbladet [Northern Daily] which he edited for a short time in the early 1870's, and in
Arnoldson was also a liberal in political philosophy, committed to the practical application of the principle of democracy and individualism. From 1882 to 1887, as an elected member of the Parliament, he introduced legislation to extend the franchise and when it failed to pass, supported legislation which later succeeded; favored the extension of religious freedom; pursued an antimilitaristic policy; drafted a controversial resolution asking the government to investigate the possibility of guaranteed neutrality for Sweden
Outside Parliament Arnoldson carried on work for peace even more vigorously. Originally attracted to pacifism because of his repugnance for the wars of 1864 and 1870-1871 and because of his religious beliefs, Arnoldson was one of those instrumental in founding the Swedish Peace and Arbitration Association in 1883, occupying the position of secretary of the society and becoming the editor of

Bajer By courtesy of the Royal Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (b. April 21, 1837, Denmarkd. Jan. 22, 1922, Copenhagen, Den.), Danish reformer and politician, cowinner (with Klas Pontus Arnoldson ) of the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1908. Bajer entered the Danish army but was discharged when it was reduced after the 1864 war with Prussia. He then started working for the emancipation of women, for the peace movement, and for Scandinavian cooperation. He was a founder of the Danish Women's Association in 1871 and established in 1882 the Association for the Neutralization of Denmark, which was renamed the Danish Peace Association in 1885. A left-wing liberal member of the Danish Parliament (1872-95), Bajer advocated international arbitration treaties and considerably influenced the development of the Danish neutrality policy. He was a prominent delegate to the first Scandinavian peace conference (1885) and provided great impetus for the formation of the International Peace Bureau in Bern in 1891; he was president of the Bureau until 1907.
