The Nobel Medal for Chemistry S Arrhenius, On the Dissociation of Substances Dissolved in Water, Z. phys. Chem., Return to Discussion on Amphoterism The Dutch chemist, van't Hoff, had shown that the osmotic pressure of a solution was related to the number of particles in solution. This was important to chemists at the time, because it provided a means of determining the molecular weight of the solute. However, whilst this relationship worked well for some solutes, such as methanol, sugars, phenol, etc., the osmotic pressures of salt solutions were always higher than expected. Arrhenius recognised that the same solutions which exhibited this apparently abnormal behavior were good conductors of electricity. He made what at the time was the novel suggestion that on dissolution in water, an acid, base or salt dissociates spontaneously into positively and negatively charged ions. This view took some time to be accepted (the PhD thesis he submitted to the University of Uppsala was granted only fourth class approval) As a consequence of this work, Arrhenius developed a definition of acids and bases, which he published in 1884. Arrhenius defined an acid as a substance which, when dissolved in water, increased the concentration of hydrogen ions and bases as substances that contained hydroxyl ions.

Realizó sus estudios en la Univ. de Upsala y después en la de Estocolmo, en la que, en 1881, el prof. Edlund le propuso el estudio de la conductividad en electrólitos, lo que verificó, presentando en 1883 su tesis doctoral Recherches sur la conductibilité galvanique des electrolytes. La parte más interesante de la tesis sostenida por A. es la idea de que las verdaderas sales, al disolverse, se disociaban 3 sin que para ello fuera preciso que pasara corriente eléctrica a través de la solución. Los iones se formaban inmediatamente después de disolverse la sal. Esta formación de iones permitía explicar las teorías que sobre la conducción electrolítica sostenían Hittorf y Kohlrausch, así como explicar fácilmente las anomalías que en la presión osmótica habían observado Raoult y Van't Hoff. b iography... home Arrhenius, Svante August (1859-1927) was a Swedish physical chemist who first explained that in an electrolyte (a solution of a chemical dissolved in water) the dissolved substance is dissociated into electrically charged ions. The electrolyte conducts electricity because the ions migrate through the solution. Although later modified, Arrhenius' theory of conductivity in solutions has stood the test of time. It was a major contribution to physical chemistry, ultimately acknowledged by the award to Arrhenius of the 1903 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Arrhenius was born in Uppsala on 19 February 1859, the son of a surveyor and estate manager who was also a supervisor at the local university. He was a brilliant student, entering Uppsala University at the age of 17 to study chemistry, physics and mathematics. After graduating in 1878, he stayed to write his doctoral thesis, but became dissatisfied with the teaching at Uppsala and went to Stockholm to study solutions and electrolytes under Erik Edlund (1819-1888). In 1884 he submitted his thesis, which contained the basis of the dissociation theory of electrolytes (although he did not at that time use the term dissociation), together with many other novel theories which aroused only suspicion and doubt in his superiors. The largely theoretical document was not welcomed by the academics, who were devoted experimentalists;

Frederick Soddy (1877 - 1956) Químico britânico nascido em Eastbourne, England, um dos pioneiros da teoria da estrutura atômica  Educado no Eastbourne College, University College of Wales, e na University of Oxford. Foi conferencista em físico-química e radioatividade na University of Glasgow (1904-1914) e professor de química de Oxford (1919-1936), quando se retirou da vida acadêmica. Juntando-se a Ernest Rutherford, passou a pesquisar sobre transformações radioativas do núcleo atômico e no desenvolvimento da teoria da estrutura atômica. Elaborou o mecanismo e as trajetórias das desintegrações radioativas e demonstrou a possibilidade da existência dos isótopos (1913), inclusive criando este termo (Ver Theodore William Richards). Ganhou o Prêmio Nobel de Química (1921) por este feito. Em sua obra escrita citam-se trabalhos como Radioactivity Interpretation of the Atom The Story of Atomic Energy (1949) e Atomic Transmutation (1953) e de natureza político-econômica, Cartesian Economies (1922) e Role of Money Jacobus Henricus [ou Hendricus] van’t Hoff(1852 - 1911) Químico holandês, nascido em Rotterdam, fundador da
