SIR WILLIAM HENRY PERKIN Perkin Medal 1906
Take a look at your shirt. Ever wonder how the manufacturer made that color? Sir William Henry Perkin, who in 1906 was awarded the first Perkin Medal, could tell you. He created the first synthetic dye almost 140 years ago. William Henry Perkin was born on March 12, 1838 in England. He was a curious boy; he liked to paint and fiddle with mechanics (he even tried to construct an engine). His father, George Fowler Perkin (1802-1865), a builder and contractor by trade, hoped that Perkin would eventually become an architect. But while Perkin was still a young boy, those hopes were dashed; he was introduced to chemistry. As Perkin recalled many years later: "When I was between twelve and thirteen years of age, a young friend showed me some chemical experiments and the wonderful power of substances to crystallize in definite forms, and the latter especially struck me very much, with the result that I saw there was in chemistry something far beyond the other pursuits with which I had previously been occupied." At about that same time, Perkin enrolled at the City of London school , where he was able to attend weekly lectures on various chemistry topics given by Thomas Hall, an instructor at the school. Realizing the abilities of Perkin, Hall encouraged him to enroll in the

AHMED ZEWAIL for his studies of the transition states of chemical reactions using femtosecond spectroscopy.
The prize was awarded for pioneering contributions in developing methods that can be used for theoretical studies of the
properties of molecules and the chemical processes in which they are involved. The prize was divided equally between:
WALTER KOHN for his development of the density-functional theory
and
JOHN A. POPLE for his development of computational methods in quantum chemistry.
The prize was divided, one half being awarded jointly to:
PAUL D. BOYER and JOHN E. WALKER for their elucidation of the enzymatic mechanism underlying the synthesis of adenosine triphosphate (ATP)
and with one half to:
JENS C. SKOU for the first discovery of an ion-transporting enzyme, Na+, K+-ATPase. The prize was awarded jointly to: ROBERT F. CURL, Jr. , SIR HAROLD W. KROTO , and RICHARD E. SMALLEY for their discovery of fullerenes. The prize was awarded jointly to: PAUL CRUTZEN , MARIO MOLINA , and F. SHERWOOD ROWLAND for their work in atmospheric chemistry, particularly concerning the formation and decomposition of ozone.

Baeyer studied with Robert Bunsen, but August Kekule exercised a greater influence on his development. He took his doctorate at the University of Berlin (1858), became a lecturer ( Privatdozent ) in 1860, and headed the chemistry laboratory at the Berlin Vocational Institute until 1872. After holding a professorship at Strassburg (now Strasbourg, France), he succeeded Justus von Liebig as chemistry professor at the University of Munich (1875), where he set up an important chemical laboratory in which many young chemists of future prominence were trained. In 1881 the Royal Society of London awarded him the Davy Medal for his work with indigo. To celebrate his 70th birthday, a collection of his scientific papers was published in 1905. Notable among Baeyer's many achievements were the discovery of the phthalein dyes and his investigations of uric acid derivatives, polyacetylenes, and oxonium salts. One derivative of uric acid that he discovered was barbituric acid , the parent compound of the sedative-hypnotic drugs known as barbiturates. Baeyer proposed a "strain" (

Vznik webu
