The Danish pacifist, Fredrik Bajer (April 21, 1837-January 22, 1922), was born in Vester Egede, near Naestved, Denmark. The son of a clergyman named Alfred Beyer, he adopted the altered spelling of his surname in 1865.
Between the ages of twenty-eight and thirty-five, Bajer laid the foundations of his later career. He studied languages, mastering French, Norwegian, and Swedish; established himself as a teacher and translator in Copenhagen; supplemented his income by free-lance writing; spoke and wrote on the subjects which were thereafter to claim the major share of his attention; and entered politics in 1872. In that year he was elected to the Folketing, the Danish House of Representatives, retaining his seat there for the next twenty-three years.
In politics Bajer displayed liberal tendencies, but, disliking party discipline, remained independent of political affiliation. The main causes he supported in his political life were those with which he had already become prominently identified: international peace and Danish neutrality, Scandinavian unity, women's rights, and education.
Bajer was one of Denmark's leading spokesmen for women's rights helping to found the Dansk Kvindesamfund [Danish Women's Society] in 1871 and supporting legislation in the Folketing on behalf of equality for women, especially in economic matters.

Nobel Lecture , May 18, 1908
The Organization of the Peace Movement
Yesterday was the seventeenth of May, Norway's great day of national celebration . Today's date, the eighteenth of May, should sometime become an occasion of great international celebration, for on this day ten years ago the first Peace Conference opened at The Hague. I regard it as a good omen that the Nobel Committee has allowed me to present my address on this particular day. There is no contradiction between a nation's strong self-esteem and its will to internationalize itself (to use a current expression) with other peoples in order to promote better understanding - the supreme aim of peace. This concept of international understanding is what Alfred Nobel called "fraternity among nations". It is not enough to cry out, "Lay down your arms" ; and this, incidentally, is not the same as "Away with armaments." We must also shout, "Lift up your hearts!" The address which I am about to give I have entitled "The Organization of the Peace Movement". My role has not, in the main, been that of a propagandist, but rather that of an organizer whose work has been discharged behind the scenes.

Bajer, Fredrik
Bajer By courtesy of the Royal Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (b. April 21, 1837, Denmarkd. Jan. 22, 1922, Copenhagen, Den.), Danish reformer and politician, cowinner (with Klas Pontus Arnoldson ) of the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1908. Bajer entered the Danish army but was discharged when it was reduced after the 1864 war with Prussia. He then started working for the emancipation of women, for the peace movement, and for Scandinavian cooperation. He was a founder of the Danish Women's Association in 1871 and established in 1882 the Association for the Neutralization of Denmark, which was renamed the Danish Peace Association in 1885. A left-wing liberal member of the Danish Parliament (1872-95), Bajer advocated international arbitration treaties and considerably influenced the development of the Danish neutrality policy. He was a prominent delegate to the first Scandinavian peace conference (1885) and provided great impetus for the formation of the International Peace Bureau in Bern in 1891; he was president of the Bureau until 1907.

III. Alfred Nobel And The Nobel Prizes Alfred Nobel is the man who invented dynamite. He is better known today, however, as the man who established some of the most prestigious prizes in the world. Born in 1833 in Stockholm, Sweden, Nobel from his youth had a dream of inventing an explosive so devastating it would deter humans from making war. Instead, his invention made war easier. Though he was a Swede by birth, he was very much an international man, being educated in St. Petersburg, Russia, where his family moved when he was a child. In St. Petersburg, he studied with private tutors, particularly showing interest in chemistry and languages. He mastered Swedish, Russian, English, French, and German. At the age of 17 he began two years of educational travel throughout Germany, France, Italy and to the United States. Then at the age of 19 he became a chemist, working with his father in St. Petersburg. The family returned to Sweden and in 1863 he was a chemist in his father's explosives factory at Heleneborg near Stockholm. In 1864 Nobel received a patent covering detonating charges and percussion caps. Called "The Nobel Igniter," it was to be called at a later time "the greatest discovery ever made in both the principle and practice of explosives." His 1866 invention of dynamite revolutionized mining, road building and tunnel blasting. In 1875 a later improvement was patented as blasting gelatine. In 1887 he patented ballistite, the first of the nitroglycerine smokeless powders. This was to serve as the basis for cordite which was eventually to change the use of firearms.
