Dr. Frederick Banting By: Rosalind Humphrey Dr. Frederick Banting a person who, while as an untrained and not a skilled scientist, became a hero. He is one of Canada's heros and was once judged the most famous Canadian. Frederick Grant Banting was born on November 14, 1891, in Alliston, Ontario, Canada. He was the youngest of five children and educated at the public and high schools at Alliston. He later went to the University of Toronto to study divinity. He failed first year arts so he transferred to medicine. In 1916 he took his M.D. and then joined the Canadian Army Medical Corps. In 1918 he was wounded at the battle of Cambrai. A year later he was awarded the Military Cross for heroism under fire. In 1919 Banting returned to Canada. But was still recovering emotionally from the war. He had become interested in diabetes and had decided to research it. Then from 1919-1920 he completed his training as an orthopedic surgeon in London, Ontario. On the night of October 31, of 1920 after reading a routine article in a medical journal, Banting wrote down an idea aimed at isolating the long sought internal secretion of the pancreas. On May 17, 1921 he began to work under the direction of J.J.R. MacLeod and was assisted by Charles Best. They were also helped by James Collip's knowledge of chemistry.

Discoverer of insulin
Founding member of the National Research Council of Canada Bio
While a physiology demonstrator at the University of Western Ontario, Dr. Banting conceived a method for separating out the active ingredient of the pancreas which could be used to control the fatal disease of diabetes. He carried out research together with Drs. Charles Best and J. Bertram Collip at the University of Toronto in 1921-22 which resulted in the first clinical use of the newly discovered hormone insulin.
After the award of the 1923 Nobel Prize in Medicine to Dr. Banting and his department head, Professor J.R.R. Macleod, Dr. Banting continued working in medical research, and played an important role in developing the national medical research programme of the Dominion Government. He died in an airplane crash in Newfoundland enroute to England on a medical research mission connected with the Second World War. SideFx
The youngest people to nominate someone to the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame were two 13-year-olds from Ilderton, Ontario. They were so excited to learn about Dr. Banting and his discovery of insulin that they collaborated on a nomination for Banting's induction to the Hall of Fame. They wrote "Our class has been studying Canadian scientists and doctors. We are nominating Sir Frederick because of his great achievements in discovering insulin to help treat diabetes."

Banting, Sir Frederick Grant 1891-1941, Canadian physician, M.D. Univ. of Toronto, 1922. From 1923 he was professor of medical research at Toronto. Working with C. H. Best under the direction of J. J. R. Macleod, he succeeded in isolating (1921) from the pancreas the hormone later called insulin. For this he shared with Macleod the 1923 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. He was knighted in 1934. Besides his work on insulin, he made valuable studies of the cortex of the adrenal glands, of cancer, and of silicosis and stimulated research in aviation medicine. He was killed in a plane crash while en route to England on a medical war mission. See Seale Harris, Banting's Miracle

Banting, Sir Frederick Grant, co-discoverer of insulin (b at Alliston, Ont 14 Nov 1891; d near Musgrave Harbour, Nfld 21 Feb 1941). Youngest of 6 children of a middle-class farm family, Fred Banting persevered through high school, failed first year in arts at U of T and then enrolled in medicine. He graduated in 1916 with above average grades, served as a medical officer in France, where he was wounded in action and decorated for valour, and in 1919-20 completed his training as an orthopedic surgeon. In July 1920 he began the practice of medicine in London, Ont.
On the night of 31 Oct 1920, after reading a routine article in a medical journal, Banting wrote down an idea for research aimed at isolating the long-sought internal secretion of the pancreas. He received support for his proposed research at U of T, where he began work on 17 May 1921 under the direction of J.J.R. Macleod and assisted by C.H. Best. Banting's and Best's experiments were crudely conducted and did not substantiate Banting's idea, which was physiologically incorrect. But their apparently favourable results encouraged greater efforts, which culminated in the winter of 1921-22 in the discovery of insulin by a team of researchers that included Macleod, Banting, J.B. Collip and Best.

It was in such a black book that Sir Frederick Grant Banting wrote his idea that he felt would lead to the successful treatment of diabetes. Sir Frederick Banting, a Canadian physician, was born in Alliston, Ontario, November 14, 1891. Sir Frederick Banting had an idea to help those who, in those times, had the deadly disease diabetes. He extracted the hormone insulin from the pancreas. In 1922, Banting successfully isolated the substance insulin and it was tested on diabetic dogs. It successfully restored their health. On January 23, 1922, insulin was first tested on a diabetic boy, 14-year-old Leonard Thompson. It proved effective for the treatment of diabetes.

(so that was umm... 1997) Sir Frederick Grant Banting was born on November 14, 1891 an died on February 21, 1941. He was born in Alliston, Ontario. A childhood friend of his died of uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, which may have had an influence onhis career choice. He considered becoming a minister, but realized that he really wanted to work in the medical field. In 1912, he entered the University of Toronto Medical School. While preparing a lecture on the pancreas and carbohydrate metabolizm in 1920, he found out that not much was known about the pancreas or diabtes. At two in the morning, Banting thought of an experiment. He would bind the pancreatic part carrying insulin into the duedenum. That might result in someone being left with only one part of their pancreas. Banting went to see Dr. F. R. Miller at Western University with his theory. Miller told Banting to go see Dr. J. J. R. Macleod. Macleod wasn't fond of the theory. Banting went back to London and discussed his choices with Miller again. Banting met Macleod again. He still didn't seem to like Banting's ideas but assigned Charles Herbert Best to work with him. Macleod agreed to let them have some lab space at the University of Toronto.

    SIR FREDERICK GRANT BANTING
Frederick Grant Banting was born on November 14, 1891, at Alliston, Ont., Canada. He was the youngest of five children of William Thompson Banting and Margaret Grant. Educated at the Public and High Schools at Alliston, he later went to the University of Toronto to study divinity, but soon transferred to the study of medicine. In 1916 he took his M.B. degree and at once joined the Canadian Army Medical Corps, and served, during the First world War, in France. In 1918 he was wounded at the battle of Cambrai and in 1919 he was awarded the Military Cross for heroism under fire. When the war ended in 1919, Banting returned to Canada and was for a short time a medical practitioner at London, Ontario. He studied orthopaedic medicine and was, during the year 1919-1920, Resident Surgeon at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto. From 1920 until 1921 he did parttime teaching in orthopaedics at the University of Western Ontario at London, Canada, besides his general practice, and from 1921 until 1922 he was Lecturer in Pharmacology at the University of Toronto. In 1922 he was awarded his M.D. degree, together with a gold medal. Earlier, however, Banting had become deeply interested in diabetes. The work of Naunyn, Minkowski, Opie, Schafer, and others had indicated that diabetes was caused by lack of a protein hormone secreted by the islands of Langerhans in the pancreas. To this hormone Schafer had given the name insulin, and it was supposed that insulin controls the metabolism of sugar, so that lack of it results in the accumulation of sugar in the blood and the excretion of the excess of sugar in the urine. Attempts to supply the missing insulin by feeding patients with fresh pancreas, or extracts of it, had failed, presumably because the protein insulin in these had been destroyed by the proteolytic enzyme of the pancreas. The problem, therefore, was how to extract insulin from the pancreas before it had been thus destroyed.
