Subject: Frederick Banting (1891 - 1941) Title: Frederick Banting Papers Dates of Creation: n.d., 1936 - 1941 Physical Description: 2 inches of textual records Biographical Sketch: Scope and Content: The Banting Papers consist of about 60 photocopied "Sunday letters" from Banting to his mother, Margaret Grant Banting in Alliston, as well as photocopies of a few letters written by friends and other family members to Mrs. Banting, and photocopies of two photographs of the Banting Farm in Alliston where Banting was born and raised. The letters mention his extensive travels, meetings with colleagues, love of painting, dinners with acquaintances like A.Y. Jackson at his 205 Rosedale Heights Drive residence in Toronto, and even a visit to the Public Archives in Ottawa. Two letters of condolence to Thompson and Nelson Banting, written in March 1941 after their brother’s death, are also included.
Filled with domestic touches, such as the adventures of his children, the state of the garden and expressions of tiredness after having given 25 speeches in a single month, these letters from a famous son to his mother show Sir Frederick in an informal and positive light Occasionally, however, they reveal Banting’s views of important events, such as the outbreak of World War II in August 1939. The letters complement more formal sources of information.

Before 1921, it was exceptional for diabetics to live more than a year or two.
Most died much sooner from the dreadful and painful wasting disease, many only
living a matter of weeks. One can only imagine what it must have been like, for the
countless distraught people diagnosed with diabetes, knowing that they had very little time left to live. Imagine being the parent of a child diagnosed with diabetes before insulin was available.

UMMS Investigator Awarded 2000 Banting Medal for "Lifetime Achievement" in Diabetes Research
February 18, 2000
WORCESTER, Mass. Crediting the "many talented scientists" with whom he works, Dr. Czech said, "This honor just enhances our enthusiasm and prompts us to redouble our efforts to find answers regarding this major disease process that affects so many lives in this country." Throughout his career, Czech has studied Type 2 diabetes (formerly known as adult-onset diabetes) which afflicts approximately 15 million Americans. Specifically, Czech and his lab are investigating the events that emanate from the insulin hormone binding to the cell surface receptor, or the action that triggers the cellular events that regulate sugar entry into the cells. "Lately, we've been particularly successful in applying genomics to this problem," Czech said. "Gene discovery has bearing on the identification of novel proteins in the insulin signaling pathway." "To those of us here at UMMS who have watched Dr. Czech's career with pride and admiration, it is no surprise that he would be honored with one of the most prestigious awards in his field," said Aaron Lazare, MD, chancellor and dean of the Medical School. "Just as Frederick Banting blazed a trail for a new generation of scientists as one of the discoverers of insulin, Michael Czech has, through his research and his leadership, led his generation of scientists ever closer to a fundamental understanding of this terrible disease."

Historia de la Medicina
La historia del Premio Nobel 1921 - 1930
Sir Archibald Vivian Hill. Inglaterra, London University (1886-1977). Otto Meyerhoff. University of Heidelberg, Alemania (1884-1951)

1923- Sir Frederick Grant Banting. Toronto University, Canada (1891 - 1941)
John James Richard Macleod. Toronto University, Toronto, Canada (1876 - 1935).

"por el descubrimiento de la insulina"
Sir Frederick Grant Banting trabajando con Charles Best, obtuvieron por primera vez insulina de un extracto pancreático. Posteriormente, trabajando en el laboratorio del fisiólogo escocés Richard McLeod, pudieron aislar la hormona lo suficientemente pura como para aplicarla en los pacientes diabéticos.
