Sir Frederick Grant Banting It occurred to me when we were puffing up the hill and the train was speeding along away below that the engine with all its power could not go up that slushy, soft, snowy road as fast as we could. Power is useless unless directed in the proper channel. People have different powers and the big question in life must be-"Are we on the right road for travel ?" We will certainly not get far in our given time unless we have chosen the road that is fitted to our particular locomotive.

Sir Frederick Grant Banting The following represents an entry into Dr. Banting's diary, March 21, 1931: It occurred to me when we were puffing up the hill and the train was speeding along away below that the engine with all its power could not go up that slushy, soft, snowy road as fast as we could. Power is useless unless directed in the proper channel. People have different powers and the big question in life must be-"Are we on the right road for travel ?" We will certainly not get far in our given time unless we have chosen the road that is fitted to our particular locomotive. Dr. Charles Herbert Best Dr. James Bertram Collip J ames Bertram Collip was one of the great minds of Canadian Medicine. Graduating from Trinity College, Toronto, at age 15, Collip completed his doctorate in Biochemistry and accepted a position as lecturer at the University of Alberta where he commended an outstanding career in biochemical research. He was on a travelling fellowship when he accepted the invitation of the University of Toronto to work with Banting and Best on the development of insulin. His efforts at purifying insulin, a working with the bovine pancreas, produced insulin in a form which permitted clinical use. Completing an M.D., Collip accepted the Chair of Biochemistry at McGill, where he launched into extensive studies of hormones. In 1941, he became Chairman of McGill's new Institute of Endocrinology. Collip capped a brilliant career as Dean of Medicine at the University of Western Ontario.

"The medicines of tomorrow will depend upon research being done today, for which animal experimentation is essential. Ignore the need for that research and we shall lose the cures that we are entitled to expect in the next 50 years for illnesses that afflict hundreds of millions of people such as cancer, heart disease, viral diseases, malaria, schistosomiasis and sickle cell anaemia." - Sir John Vane, Nobel Prizewinner 1982 Schack August Steenberger KROGH - discovers the mechanism controlling the capillary blood vessels.
