This is the first year of operation for Beadle Middle School, which has been exciting for all that have had the chance to be involved! Our school is named after George Wells Beadle, who grew up on his family farm near Wahoo, Nebraska. Dr. Beadle earned a bachelor's degree in 1926 and a master's in 1927 from the University of Nebraska. He gained a doctoral degree from Cornell University in 1931. He is credited as the person who laid the foundation for the field of biotechnology. In 1958, he, along with two others, shared the Nobel Prize for physiology and medicine for discovering that each gene determined the structure of a specific enzyme that, in turn, allowed a single chemical reaction to proceed. Dr. Beadle appeared on the cover of Time Magazine in 1958. Our building opened for the first time to 365 students on Monday, August 20, 2001. The building was dedicated on Sunday, October 14, 2001. The building has been designed as a state-of-the-art educational facility for 750 students in sixth through eighth grade. The design also allows for possible future expansion to a three-unit building, accommodating an enrollment of 1,125 students. The design facilitates and supports a true middle school philosophy including separate suites for each grade level, team teaching, staff conference rooms, and exploratory classrooms central to student access. The building area is 125,155 square feet.

George Wells Beadle
George Beadle is credited as "the man who laid the foundation for the field of biotechnology." He studied agronomy under Frank Keirn at the University of Nebraska Lincoln , earning a Bachelor of Science degree in 1926 and a Master of Science in 1927. His interest in genetics began at Cornell, where he began his graduate work and earned his Ph.D. In 1931, Beadle was distinguished National Research Council post-doctoral fellow and instructed at California Institute of Technology through 1935. He served on the faculties of Harvard University Stanford University , and the Institut de Biologie in Paris. It was then he conducted his prize-winning research: subjecting the neurospora of red bread mold to x-rays, he caused the mold to mutate. He then noted some mold ceased to produce specific organic compounds needed to survive. He added similar but different compounds and observed how the mold synthesized needed chemicals. His conclusion was that "the characteristic function of the gene was to control the synthesis of a particular enzyme. (Genetic Control of Biochemical Reactions in Neurospora, 1941) In 1946 he returned to Cal Tech as Professor and Chair of the Division of Biology. While he was serving as the George Eastman Professor at Oxford University University of Chicago from 1961-1968. During this time he brought many distinguished and prize-winning scholars to the university, and with his second wife, Muriel, he wrote
