Tibet's Dalai Lama, South African Bishop Desmond Tutu and Northern Ireland's

The first such prize was presented in 1901. It was divided equally between
Jean Henry Dunant, the Swiss founder of the Red Cross, and Frederic Passy,
founder and president of the first French peace society.
Since then, it has been presented to political figures, religious leaders, activists and aid organisations from around the world. Prominent winners In 1906 US President Theodore Roosevelt was recognised for drawing up the 1905 peace treaty between Russia and Japan. BUSH SWITCHES PARTY

(Too bad you were busy watching the World Cup; you completely missed
out on that one.) Two weeks ago, George Bush left the Republican
Party and became a member of the Israeli Likud Party of Ariel Sharon.
The President did not state it clearly, but the speech he delivered
on that afternoon of Tuesday, June 27, 2002, was much like a picture
worthy of a thousand words. This allocution must have been written by
Ariel Sharon or Bibi Netanyahu, or both. Even some members of the
Israeli Congress (Knesset) disagreed with it.
Basically, Bush demanded the dismissal (or resignation) of Yasser Arafat as a condition sine qua non for America to caution the creation of a Palestinian state. Thereby he did what Sharon feared to do openly: forgo the 1993 Oslo agreement that officially recognizes the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination. Bush continued by asking that the Constitution of the Palestinian Authority be changed and adapted to warrant a free-market economy.

Nobel Peace Prize 2002 awarded to Jimmy Carter:
The humanitarian among practitioners of Realpolitikk
By Christian Borch
His critics call him a naive “peacenik” while his supporters pay tribute to him for having introduced a new morality into international politics. Throughout his entire career as international peace broker Jimmy Carter has insisted that peacemaking efforts must be based on international law and human rights. James Earl Carter, Jr. was born in Plains, Georgia, on 1 October 1924. Farming, politics and religion were the mainstays of his upbringing. The family owned a large peanut farm and have been devoted members of the Baptist church for generations. Jimmy Carter’s political career has been strongly influenced by the Christian values of the community in which he grew up.
Naval officer and governor
Carter graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis in 1946 and served as a naval officer for seven years. In 1962 he won election as a Democrat to the Georgia State Senate. Eight years later he was elected governor of Georgia on a platform of new and radical change. His campaign communicated visions of a society without barriers between the races and a comprehensive environmental policy. Among the new generation of politicians in Georgia, Jimmy Carter represented an alternative to conventional political thinking.

BACKGROUND: NOBEL PEACE PRIZE
October 11, 2002
Tom Bearden reports on the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to former President Jimmy Carter.
Follow-up Discussion
TOM BEARDEN: 24 years ago, when the Nobel Committee awarded its peace prize to Anwar Sadat of Egypt and Menachem Begin of Israel for the Camp David Accords, it did not honor the mediator of the talks, former President Jimmy Carter. But today the panel said Mr. Carter's diplomacy at Camp David "was in itself a great enough achievement" to earn the award, let alone his efforts since he left office to resolve conflict and promote democracy and human rights worldwide. In Plains, Georgia, today, Mr. Carter said he was humbled by the award. JIMMY CARTER: The message that I derive is a commitment to peace, to the honoring of international law, to the partnership the United States must maintain as the only superpower now, but also as an integral part of the world community. TOM BEARDEN: Beyond conflict resolution, today's prize recognized Mr. Carter's efforts to promote democracy. He was on hand for Indonesia's first open vote in 1999, rural China's unprecedented party elections last year, and the year 2000 for the defeat of the PRI Party in Mexico, after seven decades in power. In all, the 39th President has directly observed at least 15 elections on three continents. The Nobel Committee also praised his work in economic and social development. Mr. Carter has led efforts to eradicate infectious diseases in the developing world and to build affordable housing here in the states. In 1996, he told the "NewsHour" how his faith has shaped his public life.

Yes No VIEW RESULTS ATLANTA, Georgia, (CNN) He became governor of Georgia in the wake of the civil rights upheavals of the '60s, he arrived at the White House amid the aftershocks of Watergate, and now he travels the world "waging peace." His greatest triumph as president came in the Middle East when he brought Menachem Begin and Anwar Sadat together at Camp David and his presidency faltered and ultimately failed under the weight of the Iran hostage crisis. Born James Earl Carter Jr., he was universally "Jimmy," a politician with the common touch right down to his blue jeans in the Oval Office on weekends and a fondness for the music of Bob Dylan.

... Norwegian news in English Second Time Lucky, Carter to Collect Nobel Prize

Reuters 09/12/2002 Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter collects the Nobel Peace Prize on Tuesday 24 years after a controversial veto by a Swedish Nobel guardian deprived him of the award for brokering Israeli-Egyptian peace. Stig Ramel, the Swedish executive director of the Nobel Foundation in 1972-92, told Reuters at the weekend he had no regrets about barring Carter on a technicality in 1978. He said he had to stick to Nobel rules as a bishop has to adhere to the Bible. "I am very happy that Jimmy Carter is getting the prize at last," said Ramel, 75. "He should have got it long ago. But I still feel my decision in 1978 was right." That year the five-member Norwegian Nobel Committee wanted to honor Carter, who was then president, for brokering the Camp David accords between then Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat. But Carter had not been nominated by a February deadline. The committee agreed to bend the rules to give Carter the prize anyway, but Ramel, who oversaw all Nobel prizes from peace to literature to chemistry, said "no" when he was consulted.

By Doug Mellgren, Associated Press Writer
The Associated Press October 11, 2002 (10-11) 10:18 PDT OSLO, Norway (AP) Former President Carter won the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for his "untiring effort" to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts and to advance democracy and human rights. The Norwegian Nobel Committee contrasted Carter's success in finding peace between Egypt and Israel through diplomacy with President Bush's vow to oust Saddam Hussein, by force if necessary. "It (the award) should be interpreted as a criticism of the line that the current administration has taken," said Gunnar Berge, the Nobel committee chairman. "It's a kick in the leg to all that follow the same line as the United States." Although the committee has often used the prize to send a political message, it rarely makes such a direct comment. Other members of the committee distanced themselves from Berge's statement, calling it his personal view. "In the committee, we didn't discuss what sort of interpretation of the grounds there should be. It wasn't a topic," committee member Hanna Kvanmo was quoted as telling the Norwegian news agency NTB.

President Jimmy Carter brought Begin and Sadat and their staffs together for 10 days of negotiations at the U.S. Presidential retreat at Camp David, Maryland in September of 1978. The accords they signed, the Camp David Accords, led to the signing of a formal treaty of peace some six months later. President Carter was awarded this year's Nobel Peace Prize in part for his efforts in mediating the Camp David Accords and in part for the peacebuilding work he and the Carter Center have done over the past 20 years.

MONDAY MORNING MEDIATOR
President Carter an tells an amazing story of how an emotional turning point led to the signing of the Camp David Accords. At the end of the ten days in Maryland, Sadat had agreed to the final form of the document while Begin had not. Begin was preparing to leave Camp David for the return trip home and asked President Carter to sign eight photographs of himself, Sadat and Carter that had been taken at Camp David. President Carter personalized each photograph with the name of one of Begin's grandchildren and signed them. He took them to the Prime Minister and as Begin looked at them, tears began to stream down his and Carter's cheeks. The President said to him, Menachem, won't you sign the Accords for them? He agreed to look at the document again and a short time later he signed it.

Underground commander, parliamentarian and the sixth prime minister, Begin was born in Brest-Litovsk, Poland, in 1913. A passionate Zionist from an early age, he joined the Betar youth movement at the age of 16 and became head of Betar Poland in 1938. Begin led the Irgun Zvai Leumi (IZL) in its battles against the British in Palestine. Under Begin's leadership the pace and the scope of IZL's challenges to British rule increased, and after World War II he ordered many of IZL's operations, including the Acre prison breakout and the bombing of the British administration's central offices at the King David Hotel. As leader of the Herut party, Begin lost eight elections until he was elected prime minister in 1977. In November 1977, six months after Begin became prime minister, president Anwar Sadat of Egypt came to Jerusalem, which led to the Camp David Accords. Begin was awarded the 1978 Nobel Peace Prize for the agreement. Twice during Begin's tenure as prime minister, military actions were launched in response to Palestinian terrorist acts against Israeli citizens: the 1978 Operation Litani and the 1982 Operation Peace for Galilee.

But their trips were canceled. While the graveside ceremony for Begin may have been simple, the funeral attracted a crowd of mourners estimated by police at 75,000. Thousands of mourners, many in tears, walked the 2 1/2 miles from the funeral home to the cemetery. A fleet of 50 busses carried others through streets that had been closed to traffic. After the family and dignitaries had left the grave, thousands of onlookers broke through the human chain of police to pay their last respects. Some kissed the freshly dug grave, some saluted and others just laid stones on the mound of earth. Begin had lived a reclusive life since his departure from office nine years ago. But he was frequently hospitalized, twice for a broken hip. His cardiac history antedated his accession to high office. Begin suffered his first heart attack in 1977, the year he led Likud to an upset victory over the long-entrenched Labour Party. After taking office, he was treated for pericarditis, an inflammation of the sac that encloses the heart. Begin was stricken with his final illness on March 3, 1993 when he collapsed in the suburban Tel Aviv home where he lived with his daughter, Leah. He was rushed unconscious to Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv, where he was initially diagnosed as having had a stroke. He was placed on a breathing machine in an intensive care unit and regained consciousness after 20 hours in a coma. Doctors had determined by then that he had in fact suffered a heart attack. A pacemaker was implanted in his chest on March 5 to control his irregular heartbeat.

Fighter and leader, Prime Minster of Israel, recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize Menachem Begin was born in Brest-Litovsk, Poland. He studied law at the University of Warsaw, and from childhood was a member of the Beitar youth movement, lead by Ze'ev Jabotinsky. Begin maintained a leadership position in the organization, and eventually became its head. After the Nazi conquest of Poland, Begin escaped to Russia, where he was jailed by the authorities on charges of espionage. He was sent to Siberia, and released a year later with all other Polish prisoners. Begin's parents and brother perished in the Holocaust. "Jews must be strong so that there will never be another Holocaust," he said, and was emphatic that the event never be forgotten. He was against German reparation payments after the war, and did not support diplomatic relations between the Israel and Germany. After arriving in the land of Israel, Begin became a commander of Eztel, an underground military organization that fought against the British. In 1946, they blew up part of the King David Hotel in Jerusalem, which was then the British Army Headquarters. Ninety British, Arabs, and Jews died, even though advance warning of the attack had been given. The British declared Begin a wanted terrorist, and offered a $50,000 reward to anyone assisting in his capture.

Begin was a strong and outspoken conservative leader, but with a pragmatic attitude to politics. While internationally praised for his achievements with establishing peace with Egypt, the condemnation of the invasion of Lebanon and the following occupation of southern Lebanon was equally strong. Begin will be remembered for conducting politics which were exclusively formed to fit the interests of Israel, no matter what outward appearance it could take. HISTORY
