MENACHEM BEGIN Politician Menachem Begin grew up in Russia and studied in Poland, where he joined Zionist forces to fight anti-Semitism. He moved to Palestine in 1940 and became the commander of the Irgun, a guerilla force responsible for terrorist acts against Arab and British military and civilian posts. Elected to the Knesset in 1949, Begin represented the conservatives, and by 1973 he was head of the Likud party. In 1977 he formed a coalition government and served as Prime Minister until 1983. As Prime Minister, Begin signed a peace treaty with Egypt in 1979 (sharing the Nobel Prize with Anwar Sadat ), but was criticized for the 1982 invasion and occupation of Lebanon (led by Ariel Sharon ). Former US president Jimmy Carter was today given the Nobel Peace Prize for his "untiring efforts" over decades to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts and to advance democracy and human rights. But in awarding the prize to the 78-year-old statesman, the Norwegian Nobel committee chairman launched a clear attack on the current US president's threats to use force against Iraq.

Jimmy Carter's Nobel Prize
Last Updated: Oct. 11, 2002 It's often said that Jimmy Carter is a better ex-president than he was a president. Although some may differ, his winning of the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday honors the best of what he brought to both jobs. Carter was cited for "decades of untiring effort" to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, beginning with his brokering of a peace treaty between Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli President Menachem Begin at Camp David in 1978. Sadat and Begin won the Nobel Peace Prize that year; Carter was not included because he had not been nominated in time. Since he was defeated by Ronald Reagan in his bid for re-election 22 years ago, Carter has traveled the world as a champion of democracy and human rights and has monitored elections in lands where democracy is fragile. The former president, according to the Nobel citation, has "stood by the principles that conflicts must, as far as possible, be resolved through mediation and interna- tional cooperation based on international law, respect for human rights and economic development."

Nobel Peaced together "I had tried hard, attempted the right things, was not always successful ... I never was able to convince the American people that I was a forceful and strong leader." That is how Jimmy Carter summed up his presidency (1977-81) in retrospect. Elected to the highest post in the U.S. during the national furore over U S intervention in Vietnam, Carter prioritised human rights over aggression, dialogues over militancy, cancelled some weapons systems, and became known as the President "who never sent a U.S. soldier into war". He may be best remembered for coaxing Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and the Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin to sign a historic peace accord at Camp David. But Carter was no hero to his people. Not only was he accused
Was your choice of Jimmy Carter for the Nobel Peace Prize 2002 prompted by the need to chastise a war mongering George Bush?

THE JEWISH WORLD
THIS WEEK IN ISRAEL EUROPEAN REPORT: MOSSAD WAS TRACKING 9/11 TERRORISTS AND WARNED ABOUT PLANNED ATTACKS - BUT AMERICANS IGNORED ALERT
For two years, 120 Mossad undercover agents in the US closely tracked the activities of the terrorists that carried out the September 11 attack. Shortly before September 11, they passed a warning alert about the terror cell to the CIA. The American authorities, however, disregarded the information - and expelled dozens of Israeli agents, including several who were monitoring the terrorists and had issued warnings to the US. This information was disclosed by the German newspaper die Weld based on secret documents, primarily of the French secret service. According to the German daily, American authorities reacted harshly because of the size of the Israeli "network" which, in addition to tracking terrorists, also showed interest in military and industrial matters. Both the US and Israel decided not to publicize this chapter. According to the report, the Israelis had warned the Americans about the planned attacks months earlier, even supplying the names of the suspects - including several of the hijackers - but, as noted the CIA ignored the information. THREE ISRAELI ARABS SUSPECTED OF PLANNING ATTACKS FOR HAMAS Three Israeli Arabs from Ramle and Lod have been arrested on suspicion of planning a series of terror attacks in Israel, in the service of the Hamas. The three were directed by Mohammed Def, the Hamas military commander in the Gaza Strip, whom Israel recently attempted to assassinate. Two of the suspects are members of the Islamic Movement in Israel.

PERSONAL STATISTICS
Hi! My name is Giulia, and I'm 10 years old. I became 10 years old on August 16, so August 16 1989 is my date of birth. Many people are always trying to figure out many things about themselves (like how old they are in days), but thinking in their heads just doesn't do, so my teacher has introduced my class to where you can find out stuff about yourself by just writing in a blank space when your birthday is and PUFF! you get what you wanted to know. So now, I'm just going to write some summaries of what I found out. First of all, on the date October 1st 1999, I was 3698 days old. On the day I was born, the moon phase was a full moon. My name, spelled either Giulia or Julia, has the meaning of "youthful".
