2. Jacinto Benavente - Biography

Jacinto Benavente (1866-1954), the son of a well-known pediatrician, was born in Madrid. He studied law, but when his father died and left him with a comfortable income, he abandoned his studies and travelled widely in France, England, and Russia. On his return to Spain he edited, and contributed to, several newspapers and journals. He published a collection of poems (1893) and achieved some fame with Cartas de mujeres El nido ajeno (1894) [Another's Nest] and Gente conocida (1896) [High Society], a satire of Madrid society. Benavente's plays deal with all strata of life; they are both serious and comic, realistic and fantastic, but it is chiefly as a writer of comedies of manners and of one-act farces that he made his name. His comedies usually take place in Madrid or in Moraleda, an imaginary provincial town in Castile. Whereas in his earlier plays Benavente had been chiefly interested in giving a faithful portrait of society, his later works show an increasing concern for a tight dramatic structure.
Benavente is best known for such plays as La Gobernadora ( 1908) [The Lady of the House] and La Malquerida (1913) [The Wrongly Loved], two psychological dramas which take place in a rural atmosphere.

Benavente wrote over 170 plays. In his early works he exposed prejudices of the upper middle class and society's defects, without being a social reformer. Benavente's second, conservative half of his literary career, is considered a long decline. " He is a rare example of a born dramatist, one whose imagination, by itself, creates in accordance with the laws of the stage, but yet avoids anything theatrical as fully as all other false conventions." In the late 1890s Benavente joined the innovative group of modernist writers known as the Generation of '98, which sought to revive Spain's prestige after its defeat in the Spanish-American war. He was named in 1899 editor of the journal Vida literaria, a voice of Generation of '98. Later he also wrote for the Madrid newspaper El Imparcial.

Jacinto Benavente (1866-1954), Spain The Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded to Jacinto Benavente y Martínez in 1922 for "the talent that he has shown, as a continuator of the illustrious traditions of Spanish drama." Essayist and literary critic, Benavente is best remembered for his theatre, throughout which the theme of love is most important. In his vast and productive literary life, his preoccupation was to show that love was the definitive and certain way to reach sincere kindness, truth, and justice. His best and most popular plays The Bonds of Interest(1907). The Lady of the House (1908) and The Passion Flower(1913), attest to this goal.

UPI/Corbis-Bettmann (b. Aug. 12, 1866, Madrid, Spaind. July 14, 1954, Madrid), one of the foremost Spanish dramatists of the 20th century, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1922. He returned drama to reality by way of social criticism: declamatory verse giving way to prose, melodrama to comedy, formula to experience, impulsive action to dialogue and the play of minds. Benavente showed a preoccupation with aesthetics and later with ethics. The extent to which he broadened the scope of the theatre is shown by the range of his plays e.g., Los intereses creados (performed 1903, published 1907; The Bonds of Interest, performed 1919), his most celebrated work, based on the Italian commedia dell'arte; Los malhechores del bien (performed 1905; The Evil Doers of Good (performed 1903; Saturday Night, performed 1926); and La malquerida (1913; "The Passion Flower"), a rural tragedy with the theme of incest. La malquerida was his most successful play in Spain and in North and South America. (1908), said to be his own favourite play, is an idyllic comedy set among the people of Castile.
