Uno de los poetas españoles de la generación del 27, de obra hondamente comprometida. (Sevilla 1898 - Madrid 1984) Poeta español, miembro de la generación del 27. Sus primeros libros acusan la influencia de Rubén Darío. Atraído por el surrealismo, supo combinarlo con cierto romanticismo y un sentido erótico. A esta etapa pertenecen sus obras Espadas como labios (1932), La destrucción o el amor, que fue premio nacional de literatura 1933, y Pasión en la tierra (1935), libro de prosa poética. Su poesía tiene un profundo sentido panteísta. La naturaleza, el paisaje, el amor y la muerte son elementos constantes en su temática. Madrileño de cuna, accedió muy joven al teatro con El nido ajeno, obra en la que evidenciaba ya un extraordinario dominio el arte escénico, así como el conocimiento, profundo y sutil, de las pasiones humanas. A lo largo de su dilatada carrera de autor, estrenó más de 150 obras, en todas las cuales brillaría por igual el ingenio, la ironía, la sátira y la comprensión, casi siempre piadosa, de la condición humana. Escribió también algunas "comedias infantiles" de primoroso dibujo, y en 1922 la Academia de Suecia le concedió el Premio Nobel de Literatura, universalizando su nombre. Don Jacinto, pese a su punzante ingenio, fue siempre un hombre bondadoso, cordial, muy comprensivo con las flaquezas del prójimo. Jamás se irritaba. A lo sumo, eso sí, despachaba al impertinente con el puyazo más adecuado a su necedad. Así, una vez en que acudió a visitarle un comité de señoras, con la pretensión de que "el Premio Nobel" hablase en el ropero de caridad que ellas regentaban, Benavente, horrorizado, trató de zafarse, pero las señoras, testarudas, le estrecharon a ruegos. Decían todas a la vez y las corteses excusas de don Jacinto naufragaban en el tremendo guirigay. Cuando, por fin, se hizo un mínimo de silencio, Benavente, sin perder la compostura, denegó, concluyente: -De una vez por todas, señoras: yo no puedo hablar a tontas y a locas.
