Hans Albrecht Bethe was born in Strasbourg, Alsace-Lorraine, on July 2 1906. He attended the Gymnasium in Frankfurt from 1915 to 1924. He then studied at the University of Frankfurt for two years, and at Munich for two and one half years, taking his Ph. D. in theoretical physics with Professor Arnold Sommerfeld in July 1928.
He then was an Instructor in physics at Frankfurt and at Stuttgart for one semester each. From fall 1929 to fall 1933 his headquarters were the University of Munich where he became Privatdozent in May 1930. During this time he had a travel fellowship of the International Education Board to go to Cambridge, England, in the fall of 1930, and to Rome in the spring terms of 1931 and 1932. In the winter semester of 1932-1933,he held a position as Acting Assistant Professor at the University of Tubingen which he lost due to the advent of the Nazi regime in Germany.
Bethe emigrated to England in October 1933 where he held a temporary position as Lecturer at the University of Manchester for the year 1933-1934, and a fellowship at the University of Bristol in the fall of 1934. In February 1935 he was appointed Assistant Professor at

Bethe, Hans Albrecht
Bethe By courtesy of Cornell University, Ithaca, New York (b. July 2, 1906, Strassburg, Ger. [now Strasbourg, France]), German-born American theoretical physicist who helped to shape classical physics into quantum physics and increased the understanding of the atomic processes responsible for the properties of matter and of the forces governing the structures of atomic nuclei. He received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1967 for his work on the production of energy in stars. Moreover, he was a leader in emphasizing the social responsibility of science. In 1939 Bethe calculated the Sun's energy production, which results from the fusion of four hydrogen atoms (each of mass 1.008) into one helium atom (mass 4.0039). No direct fusion is possible, but Bethe showed that the probabilities of the four steps of the "carbon cycle" can account for the energy output. A carbon isotope of mass 12 reacts successively with three hydrogen nuclei (protons) to form the nitrogen isotope of mass 15; energy is produced through the fusion of a fourth hydrogen nucleus to release a helium nucleus (alpha particle) and the original carbon isotope. Bethe became a U.S. citizen in 1941. At the beginning of World War II, Bethe had no U.S. clearance for military work. But, after reading in the

Hans Bethe was born in Strassburg, Germany (now Strasbourg , France). He studied at the Universities of Frankfurt and Munich , where he earned his Ph.D. under Arnold Sommerfeld in 1928. He made important contributions to the theories of electrons in crystals, the negative hydrogen ion, and the passage of charged particles through matter and wrote major review articles on one-and-two electron atoms and electrons in metals before leaving Germany in 1933 for England. There he began working in nuclear physics, and he and Rudolph Peierls developed the theoretical model of the deuteron shortly after its discovery. Bethe has been at Cornell University Edward Teller , produced a major paper on shock waves. From 1943 - 46 Bethe headed the theoretical group at Los Alamos , where the first nuclear bomb was designed and built. After the war he worked on nuclear matter and meson theory and was the first to explain the Lamb shift in the hydrogen atom. He has been an important advisor to government agencies on both defence and energy policies, and has written widely about arms control and the need for new energy policies. He continues to do research on supernovae, neutron stars, black holes, and other problems in theoretical astrophysics. Personal Web Page

I had the occasion to speak with Dr. Bethe's secretary at Cornell University during the late summer of 2001 and she informed me that Professor Bethe still comes into his office a couple of times a week. Looking back at the half century since that time, I feel the most intense relief that these weapons have not been used since World War II, mixed with the horror that tens of thousands of such weapons have been built since that time one hundred times more than any of us at Los Alamos could ever have imagined. "Today we are rightly in an era of disarmament and dismantlement of nuclear weapons. But in some countries nuclear weapons development still continues. Whether and when the various Nations of the world can agree to stop this is uncertain. But individual scientists can still influence this process by withholding their skills. Accordingly, I call on all scientists in all countries to cease and desist from work creating, developing, improving and manufacturing further nuclear weapons; and, for that matter, other weapons of potential mass destruction such as chemical and biological weapons." HANS ALBRECHT BETHE
His arrival in 1935 as a refugee from Nazi Germany, at the age of 28, launched Cornell permanently into the top rank of physics departments in the world. It was here, before World War II, that Hans Bethe published his famous reviews of nuclear physics, and did his groundbreaking work on the theory of energy production in stars, for which he would win the Nobel Prize in 1967 During the war, Bethe was a key figure at Los Alamos, as head of the theoretical physics division. After the war, he brought some of the most outstanding young physicists at Los Alamos to Cornell, in particular, Richard Feynman and Robert Wilson. Under their leadership, Cornell moved into what is now called high energy elementary particle physics, a field in which Cornell remains a vanguard to this very day. That Hans Bethe has devoted virtually his whole career to Cornell has been of inestimable value to the department and to the university. Hans Bethe was born in 1906 in Strasbourg, Germany. He attended the University of Munich, studying with Arnold Sommerfeld, and after receiving his degree in 1928, taught at Frankfurt, at Stuttgart, and at Munich. In 1930 and 1931, he received fellowships to Cambridge and to Rome, where he worked with Enrico Fermi. Bethe's career spans the evolution of nuclear physics as we know it today. He has made contributions to almost all phases of the problems of nuclear interactions and nuclear forces, but his scientific accomplishments go much beyond this. He produced the first major paper on the theory of order-disorder in alloys, and his 1947 calculation of the Lamb shift paved the way for the revolution in quantum electrodynamics.
