His father was the physiologist Albrecht Bethe . He was educated at the Goethe Gymnasium (1915-24),the University of Frankfurt am Main (1924-1926), where he studied for two years, then finished his studies at Munich (1926-1928). He obtained his Ph. D. in theoretical physics under Arnold Sommerfeld in 1928. He was then appointed instructor of physics at Frankfurt for one semester, at Stuttgart for another semester, finally becoming Privatdozent at the University of Munich in 1930, a position that he held for only three years. After the rise of the Nazis in Germany, Bethe emigrated to England in October 1933, holding a temporary position as lecturer at the University of Manchester (1933-1934) and at University of Bristol (1934-1935). In February 1935, he was appointed assistant professor at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. He was subsequently promoted to professor in 1937, a position he has held even since (as professor emeritus since 1975). Bethe subsequently became a U.S. citizen in 1941. During the World War II, Bethe worked on microwave radar at the Radiation Laboratory of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and then he served as director of theoretical physics of the

Friends, Colleagues Gather to Honor Hans Bethe By Larry Bernard From nuclear weapons to solar neutrinos, black holes to quarks, Napoleon and Tolstoy to current science policy - it was all on the table as friends, colleagues and Cornell honored Hans Albrecht Bethe last week. In a Physics Department symposium March 31-April 1 that included a public convocation, "Celebrating 60 Years at Cornell with Hans Bethe," speakers that included some of the nation's most illustrious scientists and educators contributed with a wide range of topics, all of which were of import to Bethe at some time during the past 60 years or more. Lauded by colleagues as the "social conscience of physics," the "father of nuclear physics" and the world's "Dean of Physics," Bethe was feted with scientific talks and public discussions about the smallest constituents of matter, nuclear non-proliferation and the state of basic research today. Bethe, 88, came to Cornell in 1935 and never left, except to head the Theoretical Division at Los Alamos, N.M., for the Manhattan Project during World War II. He spent many subsequent years as an influential advocate of nuclear disarmament. The John Wendell Anderson Professor of Physics Emeritus, Bethe won the Nobel Prize in physics in 1967 for solving the problem of energy production in stars. "I can do that," Bethe said, remembering the pre-war days when he looked at the problem that had dogged other physicists of the 1930s. And he did.

Nobel Prize Centennial 1901-2001 University of Chicago News: Resources University of Chicago Nobel Laureates Seventy-four Nobel Laureates have been faculty members, students or researchers at the University of Chicago at some point in their careers. Eleven have won the Nobel Prize in the last decade alone. Of the 74 Laureates, 25 have won in Physics , 22 in Economic Sciences , 14 in Chemistry , 11 in Physiology or Medicine and two in Literature Michelson was the first American to win the Nobel Prize in any of the sciences. Six Laureates are currently members of the faculty: James Heckman (Economic Sciences, 2000), Robert Lucas (Economic Sciences, 1995), Robert Fogel (Economic Sciences, 1993), Gary Becker (Economic Sciences, 1992), Ronald Coase (Economic Sciences, 1991) and James Cronin (Physics, 1980). James Heckman , a Professor in Economics and Public Policy, studies methodologies used to measure the impact of social programs, such as minimum-wage legislation and anti-discrimination law. He shared the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for work on analyzing selective samples. Robert Lucas Robert Fogel , a Professor in the Graduate School of Business, shared the award for applying economics and statistics to the study of history. In his work on slavery in the United States, Fogel has argued that the market would not have ended slavery, as it remained a profitable and efficient system for slave owners.
