LA SALLE HOME PAGE LA SALLE SCIENCE PAGE LA SALLE HIGH SCHOOL BIOLOGY GUNTHER BLOBEL Gunter Blobel received his M.D. from the University in Tubingen, he then went on to attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he received his Ph.D. in oncology. Blobel is curently working as the head professor of cell biology at the Rockefeller University. Blobel studies the transportation of protein through the cell. Blobel has discovered that each protein molecule has a specific destination and is pre-programmed to its destination. The average human cell holds approximately a billion protein molecules. There are also thousands of different types of proteins that need constant replacement. In order for this to happen there needs to be an efficient system of organization and transportation. Blobel's work showed that there is a "zip code" system in each cell. Every protein molecule that is made has a specific address. Each protein releases a special chemical that allows the passage through the membrane to the proper organelle. Because of Blobel's groundbreaking research he has been honored with many different awards. Some of these awards include the 1993 Lasker award in basic medical research. He has also received the 1996 King Fascal International Prize for Science. Along with these awards Blobel has received the highest honor that a scientist could receive, the 1999 Nobel Peace Prize for Physiology or Medicine.

Four of the last eight Nobel Prizes for medicine have dealt with the cellular communication process and its importance to our wellness. Gunter Blobel is the winner of the 1999 Nobel Prize for Physiology for the discovery that proteins have intrinsic signals that govern their transport and localization in the cell.
Gunter Blobel, M.D., Ph.D.

for a transcript of the PBS interview with Dr. Blobel. Summary
A large number of proteins carrying out essential functions are constantly being made within our cells. These proteins have to be transported either out of the cell, or to the different compartments - the organelles - within the cell. How are newly made proteins transported across the membrane surrounding the organelles, and how are they directed to their correct location?
These questions have been answered through the work of this year’s Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine, Dr Günter Blobel, a cell and molecular biologist at the Rockefeller University in New York. Already at the beginning of the 1970s he discovered that newly synthesized proteins have an intrinsic signal that is essential for governing them to and across the membrane of the endoplasmic reticulum, one of the cell’s organelles. During the next twenty years Blobel characterized in detail the molecular mechanisms underlying these processes. He also showed that similar "address tags", or "zip codes", direct proteins to other intracellular organelles.

Mayor Giuliani Honors Nobel Prize Winner Günter Blobel, M.D., Ph.D.
Highlights City's Depth of Talent in Biomedicine
Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today honored Rockefeller University cell biologist Günter Blobel, M.D., Ph.D., at City Hall, for recently winning the 1999 Nobel Prize in Medicine. The Mayor also declared Thursday, October 14th Gunter Blobel Day in New York City. Blobel received the Mayor's Award for Excellence in Science and Technology in 1997.
Blobel is the 20th Nobel Prize winner to be associated with Rockefeller University, the first U.S. biomedical research center and one of the nation's most prestigious institutions. Five previous winners are currently on campus.
"For more than 30 years, Dr. Blobel has been breaking new ground in cell biology at Rockefeller University,” said Mayor Giuliani. “His work is helping to fight such diseases like cystic fibrosis, Alzheimer's and AIDS. New York City is very proud and honored that he has achieved so much in biomedical science right here in New York City. I would also like to congratulate Rockefeller University for its rich tradition of excellence in biomedical research."
A John D. Rockefeller Jr. Professor at Rockefeller University in New York City, and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator, Blobel heads the Laboratory of Cell Biology. He studies the process by which newly made proteins are transported across the membranes of cell structures called organelles. Because the accurate distribution of proteins to their proper places in the cell is necessary for a cell to function, these findings will help fight many diseases.

Nobel Prizes for outstanding contributions in the fields of Medicine, Chemistry, Physics and Literature were recently announced. The Nobel Prize in Medicine went to a German immigrant to the United States, Dr. Gunter Blobel of Rockefeller University in New York. The Prize Citation reads: "For research on signals that govern the transport and location of proteins within cells." Dr. Anmed Zewail from Egypt won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. His research makes it possible to watch atoms in slow motion during the course of chemical reactions proceeding at an extremely high velocity. Maritus Veltman of the Netherlands and his colleague, Gerardus T. Hooft, received the Nobel Prize for Physics for putting old theories on particle physics the study of units that make up atoms on a firm mathematical foundation. Novelist Gunter Grass, Germany's greatest writer of the post-war generation, won the Nobel Prize in Literature. His works, The Tin Drum, Cat and Mouse and Dog Years, published between 1959 and 1963, (collectively known as the Danzig Trilogy) earned him a reputation as one of the leading figures in the mainstream of twentieth century world literature. Note: Fred Klidaras is the Nobel Prize Recipients Liaison for Canada. An immigrant to Canada from Olympia, Greece, Mr. Klidaras is a retired UNB employee who still makes his home in Fredericton.

I want to live forever... I want to learn how fly!" yada yada yada. (Sorry. These things are like instinct to me.) ;) Seriously, I suppose I agree in principle with your post. I say "in principle" because I've never actually had any fame (yet). Privacy has always been very important to me. I've been part of several internet communities since I went online 5 years ago; but I've never seen in person anyone I met online. I can't imagine what it would be like to be beseiged by papparatzi, but it must be awful to have your every move so closely monitored. (I don't even like people to watch over my shoulder as I surf the net!) Still, I must say that I was similar as a child. Only for me, I fantasized as I read the Encyclopedia Britanica. I always wanted to be known for what I thought and did: a scientist, a great statesman, an author, a composer. As I grew older, I started to focus on science. Being a biochemistry major, "Nobel" has always been the magic word. Both this summer and last, I worked in a research lab. The lab is headed by a Nobel laureate. I don't know how much it changed him, but I don't think the average person on the street knows who he is. (Well? Can you name any Nobel laureates in the sciences? Even plenty of scientists couldn't name most of the recent ones.) He enjoys considerable power within his institution, but on the other hand, being also a department chair, also is occupied with administrative tasks. So it's still a trade off.

The Lasker Awards, the nation's most distinguished honor for outstanding contributions to basic and clinical medical research, will be presented on Friday, September 22nd at a luncheon in New York City. Three awards will be presented for Basic Medical Research; two awards for Clinical Medical Research; and one award for Special Achievement in Medical Science.
The 2000 Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research is shared by Aaron Ciechanover and Avram Hershko of the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology and Alexander Varshavsky of the California Institute of Technology for the discovery and the recognition of the broad significance of the ubiquitin system of regulated protein degradation, a fundamental process that influences vital cellular events, including the cell cycle, malignant transformation, and responses to inflammation and immunity.
The 2000 Albert Lasker Award for Clinical Medical Research is shared by Harvey Alter and Michael Houghton for pioneering work leading to the discovery of the virus that causes hepatitis C and the development of screening methods that reduced the risk of blood transfusion-associated hepatitis in the U.S. from 30% in 1970 to virtually zero in 2000.

Although this work has long been known in molecular biology, it is worth
noting that all of the details of the "postal service" of the eukaryotic
cell were already present in the first metazoan organism, since the
progenitor of both plant and animal cells was already equipped with the
complete postal delivery system (as well as all of the other complexitites
of molecular biology). This means whatever molecular biological evolution
that has occurred would have to have occurred prior to the Cambrian, where
there is no physical evidence for its occurrence. Just a thought.
Summary for the Nobel Prize in Medicine, 1999
A large number of proteins carrying out essential functions are constantly being made within our cells. These proteins have to be transported either
