Ian Maclean Smith, M.D.
Emeritus Professor
Department of Internal Medicine
University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics

Creation Date: October 2000
Last Revision Date: October 2000
Peer Review Status: Internally Peer Reviewed Last week my reading of an obituary, the Nobel Prizes, and the Lasker Awards allowed me to muse on medical discoveries and the breadth of change that has occurred in medicine. The subjects explored by the scientists were body and cell maintenance and information processing. Dr. Konrad Bloch, Nobel Laureate of 1964, died on October 15, 2000. Scientists had known about cholesterol since 1820, but not how it was made. By using the isotope deuterium, Bloch showed how the body forms cholesterol in the liver from acetic acid by 36 biochemical steps. Most of the "blood vessel destroying" cholesterol is made in our body, not ingested. This led to the design of drugs you hear advertised called stains that block the liver process that produces cholesterol. Dr. Jack Kilby invented the integrated circuit in 1958 and Dr. Zhores Alferov and Dr. Herbert Kroemer improved it. All three got the Nobel Prize. Dr. Robert Noyce was not included in the year 2000 Nobel Prizes, as he died in 1990. You mustn't die too soon if you want the prize. These circuits are now used throughout medicine, in computers, CD players, bar code readers and in implantable devices.

58. Laureates
FSU's other nobel laureates are ·Dr. konrad E. bloch, corecipient of the 1964nobel Prize in medical physiology for discoveries concerning the mechanism
http://www.fsu.edu/~fstime/FS-Times/Volume2/apr97web/11apr97.html
APRIL / MAY 1997 Archives Features News Notes Charlie Barnes ... In Memoriam Laureates add energy, prestige to FSU faculty By John S. Cole FSU Communications Group Few Southeastern schools can boast of even one Nobel laureate on the faculty. Florida State University has had five. With less than 50 years of graduate science programs under its belt, FSU has already hired more Nobel Prize winners than any other college or university in the Southeast, according to Dr. Steve Edwards, FSU's dean of the faculties. Their presence has done wonders to strengthen and expand not only FSU's science programs but its overall standing in the academic community. "Having Nobel laureates has multiple advantages," said Donald Foss, dean of Arts and Sciences. "They bring a tremendous amount of energy and intelligence to the campus and to the colleagues with whom they work. That helps to energize the university." FSU's first such Nobel-inspired excitement came in the winter of 1966, when chemistry professor Robert S. Mulliken won the prize in chemistry. Mulliken, whose work focused on how molecules interact with one another, was originally a physics professor at the University of Chicago, where he actually did the research that earned him his prize.
