Heinrich Boell is one of the most important and best-known writers of the Federal Republic of Germany. "Bound by the times and my contemporaries, to what my generation has lived through, experienced, seen, and heard," as he himself wrote, he was the critical chronicler of Germany's history at mid-century. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature for his novels and short stories in . His courageous and unerring intervention significantly enriched and influenced political culture in Germany. Throughout his life, Heinrich Böll transcended all ideological boundaries in his committed support of persecuted colleagues, civil rights activists, and political prisoners; this once earned him the mocking title of "Warden of the Dissident Wayfarers" in an East German magazine. Between two wars - childhood and adolescence
Heinrich Boell, the sixth child of Viktor Boell, master carpenter and woodcarver, and his wife Maria, is born in Cologne on 21 December, when wartime hunger is at its worst.
The family moves from the southern part of the old city to the more outlying district of Raderberg. Heinrich attends elementary school in Cologne-Raderthal.
He enters the Kaiser-Wilhelm Gymnasium, a classical grammar school in Cologne.
The great depression leads to the collapse of the small bank for craftsmen in which Viktor Boell has invested. The Boells have to sell their house in Raderberg and move back to the south city district of Cologne. In the years that follow they are not much better off then the rest of the three million unemployed. Visits to pawnbrokers, bailiffs on the doorstep and the seizure of household goods become part of everyday life.
On January 30, 1933 Hitler is appointed Chancellor. The Nazi terror spreads in Cologne, too. The Boell family discusses political events frequently and openly, on Hitler's election Heinrich's mother comments, "This means war!" Dated manuscripts in Boell's literary remains, short stories and poems, show that he started writing in 1936.

Artists Residency at the Cottage of Heinrich Böll in Achill Introduction;
Achill Island is located off the Mayo Coast, connected by a bridge to the mainland. The Island is 15 miles wide and 12 miles long with dramatic coastlines and landscape, featuring varieties of mountains, cliffs, beaches, boglands and some farmlands. There are 21 villages throughout the island, each with unique identities. Large areas of the Island are uninhabited. The population is approximately 3,500 in winter, with a large increase during the summer tourist season. The Island has a tradition of fishing, farming, and tourism, with a large dependency on emigration. The Island has a high level of cultural awareness, especially in traditional music, Irish language, ( part of the island is in the Gaeltacht - Irish speaking - area ), literature and painting.

In the 1920s, the leading American painter Robert Henri worked on the Island, partially as an escape from the introduction of European modernism to New York following the Armoury Show of 1913. A tradition of landscape painting became associated with the island up to the 1950s, with prominent Irish Artists visiting the Island on a regular basis, most notably Belfast painter Paul Henry, who moved to Achill from London looking for an unspoiled environment.
