Beatty Pictures a Liberal Presidential Campaign
LOS ANGELES TIMES BEVERLY HILLS, CALIF.
Actor Warren Beatty sketched out the script for a liberal presidential campaign Wednesday night but did not say whether he would play the leading role himself. In a dizzying testament to the media fascination with celebrity, the 62-year-old actor and director drew more than 150 reporters from around the world. The media turnout dwarfed the attendance at any of the major policy speeches by the leading candidates in either party this year; earlier Wednesday afternoon, Democratic hopeful Bill Bradley drew a press corps roughly one-tenth as large when he visited a community health care center just south of downtown Los Angeles. Amid all the frenzy, Beatty delivered an exhaustive and self-deprecating speech. Apparently nervous at first, he rattled off facts and figures and touched on a long list of liberal concerns from globalization, to universal health care (he called for a government-run single-payer universal system), to the gap between rich and poor, to the fees charged for lumber and mining resources on public lands.

Nobel a Gunter Grass

e morale".

T he Appeal calls upon those with "economic and political power" to "protect the biosphere from pollution, conserve natural resources, restore degraded environments and analyze human activities which are causes of climatic change; consider their prevention and the duties of those who are involved."
T he Nobel Laureates argue in the Appeal that "only collectively recognized responsibilities can form the basis of effective legislation, which must include obligations, prohibitions and sanctions." They call for the reduction of "the waste of energy of and the use of fossil fuels," and the development of "R&D which lead to renewable and safe forms of energy."
F
T he Appeal calls "on those with political or economic power not to simply invoke Oeconomic realism,¹ Oinevitability,¹ or the flow of history in order to excuse and tolerate bad consequences of technological developments." They argue that "human dignity and the equilibrium of the biosphere are too important to be dismissed this way."

Any changes, additions, or deletions to this course description will be announced in class and made available in writing on this web page as well as through an e-mail announcement using the class alias.
Required Texts, Supplies, and Equipment
Mack, Maynard, ed. The Norton Anthology of World Masterpieces. Expanded Ed. in One Vol. NY: Norton, 1997. Manila folders, sized for 8 1/2 by 11 inch paper. Spiral notebook or three-ring binder. Computer disk(s). A computer with access to the web. (If you do not own a computer, you may use a computer in one of the RU computer labs.)
Class Philosophy
This course is based on the premise that active learning is preferable to passive learning. It is also based on the premise that students need to contribute to a course if that course is to be successful. As a result of these premises, you can expect very little in the way of lectures; you can, however, expect a lot of discussion and hands-on activities. Obviously, this course will place a lot of responsibility on you and your fellow classmates. You can expect me as an instructor to carefully select readings and to design appropriate activities to illustrate the issues raised by those readings. For your part, however, you will need to attend regularly, prepare thoughtfully, and shoulder your share of classroom discussions and activities. In this classin all your classes your progress and that of your classmates depends on your willingness to attend, prepare, and participate.
