Jules Bordet
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Jules Jean Baptiste Vincent Bordet June 13 April 6 ) was a Belgian immunologist and microbiologist. The bacterial genus Bordetella is named for him. He became Doctor of Medicine in 1892 and began his work at the Pasteur Institute in Paris in 1894, where, in the laboratory of Elie Metchnikoff, he described phagocytosis of bacteria by white blood cells . In 1898 he described hemolysis evoked by exposure of blood serum to foreign blood cells. In 1900, he left Paris to found the Pasteur Institute in Brussels, and made his discovery that the bacteriolytic effect of acquired specific antibody is significantly enhanced in vivo by the presence of innate serum components which he termed alexine (but which are now known as complement ). This mechanism became the basis for

    * after "Jules Bordet 1870 1961" by Professor Jacques Beumer, honorary director of the Brussels Pasteur Institute in the "Bulletin d'Information" (1993) edited by "Les Amis de l'Institut Pasteur de Bruxelles - De Vrienden van het Instituut Pasteur van Brussel".
Jules BORDET, the first director of the "Institut Pasteur du Brabant", was born in Soignies on June 13th, 1870. After secondary school in the "Athénée de Bruxelles", he enrols in the Faculty of Medicine at the "Université Libre de Bruxelles", where he graduated as an MD in 1892, at the same time as his brother Charles. During their studies they spent quite some time in the laboratories of Paul Héger and Léo Errera.
His work on unequal bacterial development in synthetic media, carried out at the University laboratories lead to a grant from the Belgian Government. This enabled him to join the Pasteur Institute in Paris in 1894. In the meantime, during 1893, he was associate physician in the "Roger de Grimberghe Martitiem Hospitaal" in Middelkerke (Belgium).
At the Pasteur Institute in Paris, he worked in Elie Metchnikoff's lab, who had discovered the phagocyte mechanism, through which white blood cells eliminate infections by including and killing the invading microorganisms. Hereby Metchnikoff had set the basis of cellular immunity. Bordet was to discover the basis of humoral immunity, i.e. the organism defense based on substances in the serum, present in a natural manner or acquired as response to exposure to microbes or foreign bodies in the organism. When Bordet started his work in Metchnikoff's lab, Pfeiffer, a German scientist, had just discovered that serum of a cholera vaccinated guinea pig was capable of killing the cholera vibrio when given intraperitoneally to a non vaccinated infected guinea pig.

Premios Nobel de Fisiología y Medicina
    Premio Nobel
