Norman Borlaug: A Billion Lives Saved
One would think that saving a billion lives in developing countries, winning the Nobel Peace Prize, and being regarded in many parts of the world as among the leading Americans of this age would be enough to make someone a household name within America. And yet, very few Americans would be able to say who Norman Borlaug is, leave alone list any of his groundbreaking accomplishments in solving the problems of world hunger. Borlaug, now in his late eighties, is a plant breeder who was born in Iowa, in 1914. The vast majority of his professional life has been spent living and working in the developing countries of the worldMexico, Pakistan, India, China, and most recently, regions of Africa. Borlaug's childhood home in Cresco, Iowa As Borlaug was growing up on a small farm in Cresco, Iowa, first the Depression Era, and then the Dust Bowl of the Midwest, were formative experiences. However, counter to the popular mythology about the Dust Bowl as the creation of "excessive technological resources" applied to agriculture, Borlaug surmised that it was actually the result of insufficient application of technology. He noticed that in places where techniques of high yield agriculture were being systematically applied, Dust Bowl conditions never developed with the same severity. (This was to be proven again in the Dakotas in the summer of 1988, where no Dust Bowl materialized despite severe drought conditions identical to those that triggered it earlier.)

Borlaug, Norman E.
After completing his primary and secondary education in Cresco, Borlaug enrolled in the University of Minnesota where he studied forestry. Immediately before and immediately after receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in 1937, he worked for the U.S. Forestry Service at stations in Massachusetts and Idaho. Returning to the University of Minnesota to study plant pathology, he received the master's degree in 1939 and the doctorate in 1942. From 1942 to 1944, he was a microbiologist on the staff of the du Pont de Nemours Foundation where he was in charge of research on industrial and agricultural bactericides, fungicides, and preservatives.
In 1944 he accepted an appointment as geneticist and plant pathologist assigned the task of organizing and directing the Cooperative Wheat Research and Production Program in Mexico. This program, a joint undertaking by the Mexican government and the Rockefeller Foundation, involved scientific research in genetics, plant breeding, plant pathology, entomology, agronomy, soil science, and cereal technology. Within twenty years he was spectacularly successful in finding a high-yielding short-strawed, disease-resistant wheat. To his scientific goal he soon added that of the practical humanitarian: arranging to put the new cereal strains into extensive production in order to feed the hungry people of the world - and thus providing, as he says, "a temporary success in man's war against hunger and deprivation," a breathing space in which to deal with the "Population Monster" and the subsequent environmental and social ills that too often lead to conflict between men and between nations. Statistics on the vast acreage planted with the new wheat and on the revolutionary yields harvested in Mexico, India, and Pakistan are given in the presentation speech by Mrs. Lionaes and in the Nobel lecture by Dr. Borlaug. Well advanced, also, is the use of the new wheat in six Latin American countries, six in the Near and Middle East, several in Africa.

(Photo courtesy Norman Borlaug University) University of Minnesota alumnus Norman Borlaug, the father of the "Green Revolution," won the 1970 Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to increase food production in Third World countries. One observer credits him with saving more lives than anyone who has ever lived.
Borlaug, a native of Cresco, Iowa, earned degrees in forestry and plant pathology at the U in the late 1930s and early '40s. In 1943, Borlaug began working for the Rockefeller Center. He was sent to Mexico and began researching new strains of wheat which could thrive in a wide variety of conditions and yield more grain per acre. Borlaug and his colleagues developed various dwarf varieties of wheat - which could withstand higher levels of fertilizer, were more resistant to disease, and produced double the yield per acre. These wheat varieties were introduced in India and Pakistan in the 1960s, and many other countries in later years.
The development of high-yield wheat meant these countries could produce enough food to feed their growing populations. Borlaug's research came at a time when many were predicting massive food shortages in Third World countries would lead to mass starvation.

Founder, The World Food Prize
1970 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate In 1970 Norman E. Borlaug was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for a lifetime of work to feed a hungry world. Although a scientist with outstanding contributions, perhaps Dr. Borlaug's greatest achievement has been his unending struggle to integrate the various streams of agricultural research into viable technologies and to convince political leaders to bring these advances to fruition. Born of Norwegian descent, Dr. Borlaug was raised in Cresco, a small farming community in northeast Iowa. He learned his work ethic on a small mixed crop and livestock family farm and obtained initial education in a one-room rural school house. His skills as an athlete (mainly in wrestling) opened the door for him to attend the University of Minnesota, where he studied to be a forester, wrestled, and worked various odd jobs. After graduating in 1937 with a BS in Forestry, he went to work for the United States Forest Service, initially in Idaho and later in Massachusetts and Connecticut. He returned to graduate school at the University of Minnesota, and took up the study of plant pathology, receiving his Ph.D. in 1942. Dr. Borlaug then worked as a Microbiologist for E.I. Dupont de Nemours, until being released from his wartime service.

NOBEL PEACE PRIZE WINNER VISITS October 11, 2001One of America's few living winners of the Nobel Peace Prize, agronomist Dr. Norman Borlaug, will visit the Spring Creek campus of Collin County Community College District in Plano, Texas, on October 30 - 31, 2001. On Tuesday, October 30, he will give an address, which is free and open to the public, at 1:00 p.m. in the John Anthony Theater. This lecture, entitled "Food: Instrument of Human Improvement," will expand on the ideas that have earned him the title "father of the green revolution." Born in 1914 and raised during the lean days of the American dust bowl, Dr. Borlaug received the Nobel Prize in 1970, according to The Atlantic Monthly, "primarily for his work in reversing the food shortages that haunted India and Pakistan in the 1960s. The form of agriculture that Borlaug preaches may have prevented a billion deaths." The current humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan makes his visit all the more timely and important. "He is an inspiration to our students," said Kay Mizell, director of the Honors Institute. "Dr. Borlaug embodies a lifelong struggle against human misery and abject hunger. We in the Honors Institute seek to share with our students those scholars who are dedicated to the betterment of mankind."

We can feed the world; here's how.
    By Norman Borlaug
Posted 28/05/02 Sign up here for free email updates! Thirty-two years ago, I was chosen to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, representing the thousands of researchers who created the higher crop yields of the Green Revolution. The extra food created saved perhaps a billion people from starving in the 1960s. Today, we are faced with another, equally enormous task. We must learn to produce nearly three times as much food for the more populous and more prosperous world of 2050, and from the farmland we are already using, in order to save the planet's wildlands. That's why I am one of the signers of a new declaration in support of protecting nature with high-yield farming and forestry. (Co-signatories include former Sen. George McGovern and Per Pinstrup-Andersen, the winner of the 2001 World Food Prize.)
