Carl Bosch was born at Cologne on August 27, 1874, and grew up there. From 1894 to 1896 he studied metallurgy and mechanical engineering at the Technische Hochschule in Charlottenburg, but started reading chemistry at Leipzig University in 1896. He graduated under Professor Wislicenus with a paper on organic chemistry in 1898. He entered the employ of the Badische Anilin- und Sodafabrik, Ludwigshafen, Rhine as a chemist in April 1899 and participated actively in the development of the then new industry of synthetic indigo under the guidance of Dr. Rudolf Knietsch.
At the turn of the century Bosch became interested in the problem of the fixing of nitrogen and his first experiments in this field were done with metal cyanides and nitrides; in 1907 he started a pilot plant for the production of barium cyanide.
Bosch's opportunity for really large-scale work came when in 1908 the Badische Anilin- und Sodafabrik acquired the process of high-pressure synthesis of ammonia, which had been developed by

Bosch, Carl
Carl Bosch Bavaria-Verlag (b. Aug. 27, 1874, Cologne, Germanyd. April 26, 1940, Heidelberg), German industrial chemist who developed the Haber-Bosch process for high-pressure synthesis of ammonia and received, with Friedrich Bergius , the 1931 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for devising chemical high-pressure methods. Bosch was educated at the University of Leipzig, where he studied under Johannes Wislicenus and obtained his doctorate in 1898 for research in organic chemistry. His interests were, however, general, and he studied engineering in Charlottenburg in 1894 and obtained workshop experience. Leaving Leipzig, Bosch worked for BASF AG, of which (when it became part of the cartel IG Farben) he was later president; and here he succeeded in transferring from laboratory to industrial scale Fritz Haber 's process for synthesizing ammonia from its elements, hydrogen and nitrogen, catalytically at high pressures. Research on this process involved the carrying out of more than 20,000 experiments, including an exhaustive search for catalysts among the metals and their compounds. The Haber-Bosch process became the main industrial procedure for nitrogen fixation He also invented the Bosch process for preparing hydrogen on a manufacturing scale by passing a mixture of steam and water gas over a suitable catalyst at high temperature.

SECTION 4 "Nobel Prize Winner"
In the fourth section, "Nobel prize winner", Bosch´s technical and scientific achievements are documented by his honors and distinctions, but above all by his 1931 Nobel prize for chemistry. In contrast to the hitherto applied criteria of awarding the Nobel prize for scientific discoveries, Bosch received this honor for converting a laboratory procedure into a large-scale industrial process. In 1918, Fritz Haber had already been awarded the Nobel prize in chemistry for the development of the ammonia synthesis on a laboratory scale.
In 1931 Bosch was awarded the Nobel prize for chemistry together with F. Bergius The honors, he received from universities, are as well a result of Bosch´s sponsoring strategy: the promotion of science and research, a commitment that culminated in the presidency of the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gesellschaft. ETAPE 4 "Prix Nobel"
