The Dispossessed
by 100 Nobel Laureates
The following statement was released on December 7, 2001, by 100 Nobel Prize winners to coincide with the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the first Nobel prizes. Although the statement began circulating among the laureates last summer, most of them signed it after September 11. The most profound danger to world Peace in the coming years will stem not from the irrational acts of states or individuals but from the legitimate demands of the world's dispossessed. Of these poor and disenfranchised, the majority live a marginal existence in equatorial climates. Global warming, not of their making but originating with the wealthy few, will affect their fragile ecologies most. Their situation will be desperate and manifestly unjust. It cannot be expected, therefore, that in all cases they will be content to await the beneficence of the rich. If then we permit the devastating power of modern weaponry to spread through this combustible human landscape, we invite a conflagration that can engulf both rich and poor. The only hope for the future lies in cooperative international action, legitimized by democracy. It is time to turn our backs on the unilateral search for security, in which we seek to shelter behind walls. Instead, we must persist in the quest for united action to counter both global warming and a weaponized world.

The 1997 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was jointly awarded to Professor Paul D. Boyer, University of California, Los Angeles, USA, and Dr. John E. Walker, Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge, United Kingdom for their elucidation of the enzymatic mechanism underlying the synthesis of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and to Professor Jens C. Skou, Aarhus University, Denmark for the first discovery of an ion-transporting enzyme, Na , K -ATPase. More information about their work can be obtained from the Nobal Prize announcement itself.
The 1996 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was jointly awarded to Robert Curl Harold Kroto , and Richard Smalley for their work in fullerenes, carbon atoms bound together in soccer ball like configurations. This discovery of a new allotrope of carbon, other than the well known graphite and diamond forms, came as a shock to most physicists and chemists. Following is the chancellor’s tribute: Dr. Paul Boyer has devoted his career as a researcher and educator to unraveling riddles about fundamental chemical processes that affect all life. His work has proven so profound that in 1997 Professor Boyer received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his pioneering investigation of the formation of adenosine triphosphate, ATP, which is the key to the cellular energy that drives all biological reactions. Every cell function relies on ATP, from the building of bones to the contraction of muscles and the transmission of nerve impulses. The mechanisms that produce ATP are highly complex, and have challenged scientists for decades. Professor Boyer devoted six decades of work to the study of enzymes, particularly to the study of oxidative phosphorilization, the process in which the energy that organisms acquire from food is converted largely to ATP. He helped explain the process by developing a model of how the various subunits of the enzyme ATP synthase work together like gears, like levers and like ratchets to generate ATP. You can imagine how revolutionary that was, thinking in terms of biology and chemistry to come up with a model that looked like gears and ratchets and levers. I’m sure people thought he was nuts, and they were only a little bit right.

Awarding of the 1997 Nobel Prize in Chemistry to Paul D. Boyer (Molecular Biology Institute, University of California, Los Angeles, USA) and John E. Walker (MCR Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge, UK) for the studies of the structure and mechanism of operation of H -transporting ATPases is notable for a few reasons. First of all, it is pleasant to note that this is the third Nobel Prize during the last 20 years which is awarded for the studies in bioenergeticsa science which was originated in Russia by classic works of V. A. Engelhardt [ ], who discovered oxidative phosphorylation, and V. A. Belitser, who described it quantitatively [ ]. Second, this event indicates that biological chemistry is probably the most volatile and successfully developing branch of chemistry. Third, even a brief description of the essentials of the studies crowned by the main scientific prize shows that successful solution of global biochemical problems is possible only by the indispensable combination of classic enzymological and structural approaches. The study of the mechanism of oxidative phosphorylation in terms of modern physical-chemical biology was started 37 years ago when in the USA in the laboratory of E. Racker, one of the greatest enzymologists of the 20th century, a new protein was isolated. This protein was simultaneously an ATPase and a "coupling factor" which restored oxidative phosphorylation in membranes depleted by a "factor" of submitochondrial particles [

The statement, four sentences long, argues that an American attack would ultimately hurt the security and standing of the United States, even if it succeeds. The signers, all men, include a number who at one time or another have advised the federal government or played important roles in national security. Among them are Hans A. Bethe, an architect of the atom bomb; Walter Kohn, a former adviser to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency at the Pentagon; Norman F. Ramsey, a Manhattan Project scientist who readied the Hiroshima bomb and later advised NATO; and Charles H. Townes, former research director of the Institute for Defense Analyses at the Pentagon and chairman of a federal panel that studied how to base the MX missile and its nuclear warheads. In addition to winning Nobel prizes, 18 of the signers have received the National Medal of Science, the nation's highest science honor.

Det Kongelige Videnskabsakademi i Stockholm har i dag uddelt Nobelprisen i kemi for 1997 til tre modtagere: Professor Jens C. Skou får den ene halvdel for opdagelsen af det iontransporterende enzym, Na , K -ATPase (natrium, kalium-stimuleret adenosintrifosfatase). Dette enzym opretholder balancen af natrium- og kaliumioner i den levende celle. Den anden halvdel af prisen deles mellem professor Paul D. Boyer fra USA og Dr. John E. Walker fra Storbritannien. Jens C. Skou, der er født i Lemvig i 1918, blev cand.med. fra Københavns Universitet i 1944 og dr.med. i 1954. Han kom til Aarhus Universitet i 1947 og blev udnævnt til professor i fysiologi i 1963. I 1977 blev han udnævnt til professor i biofysik. Han tog sin afsked fra universitetet i 1988, men har beholdt sit kontor på instituttet. Jens C. Skou har tidligere modtaget Leo-prisen, Novo-prisen, Konsul Carlsens Pris, Anders Retzius-guldmedalje fra Det svenske Lægeselskab, Eric K. Fernströms store nordiske pris, ligesom han er udnævnt til æresdoktor ved Københavns Universitet.
