29 January 2003 Forty-one American Nobel laureates have signed a declaration opposing war with Iraq. The declaration was organised by Walter Kohn, a theoretical physicist at the University of California at Santa Barbara, and former adviser to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency at the Pentagon. The signatories include 19 winners of the physics prize. The declaration reads: "The undersigned oppose a preventive war against Iraq without broad international support. Military operations against Iraq may indeed lead to a relatively swift victory in the short term. But war is characterized by surprise, human loss and unintended consequences. Even with a victory, we believe that the medical, economic, environmental, moral, spiritual, political and legal consequences of an American preventive attack on Iraq would undermine, not protect, US security and standing in the world." The signatories include Norman Ramsey, who worked on the Manhattan Project, and Charles Townes, a former research director of the Institute for Defense Analyses at the Pentagon. Townes was also chairman of a federal panel that studied nuclear warheads.

NOBEL PRIZE WINNER SPEAKS AT CLEMSON TUESDAY
CLEMSON Nobel Prize winner Paul D. Boyer will speak at a public lecture at 4 p.m., Tuesday, at the Strom Thurmond Institute. The University of California at Los Angeles professor emeritus, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1997, will talk about his discoveries in connection with adenosine triphosphate, or ATP, the compound that stores and transfers energy in living cells. As the universal carrier of chemical energy in the cell, ATP is the channel through which food is converted to useful energy for the body's every function, from thinking to breathing to moving. ATP has been called the "cell's energy currency" because it captures energy released by the combustion of nutrients and transfers it to reactions that require energy, such as the assembly of cell components, muscle contraction, transmission of nerve messages and many other functions. It serves this function in all living organisms, from bacteria and fungi to plants and animals, including humans. Boyer helped shed light on the process in which the energy that organisms acquire from food is converted largely to ATP.

100 Nobel laureates warn that our security hangs on environmental and social reform The most profound danger to world peace in the coming years will stem not from the irrational acts of states or individuals but from the legitimate demands of the world's dispossessed. Of these poor and disenfranchised, the majority live a marginal existence in equatorial climates. Global warming, not of their making but originating with the wealthy few, will affect their fragile ecologies most. Their situation will be desperate and manifestly unjust.
It cannot be expected, therefore, that in all cases they will be content to await the beneficence of the rich. If then we permit the devastating power of modern weaponry to spread through this combustible human landscape, we invite a conflagration that can engulf both rich and poor. The only hope for the future lies in co-operative international action, legitimized by democracy.
It is time to turn our backs on the unilateral search for security, in which we seek to shelter behind walls. Instead, we must persist in the quest for united action to counter both global warming and a weaponized world.
These twin goals will constitute vital components of stability as we move toward the wider degree of social justice that alone gives hope of peace.

A brief history of ATP synthase research
ATP was discovered by German chemist Karl Lohmann.
Vladimir Engelhart noted that muscle contractions require ATP.
Herman Kalckar established that ATP synthase is linked with cell respiration.
ATP had been considered to be the final product of catabolyc reactions.

Term oxidative phosphorylation introduced
Fritz Lipmann shown that ATP is the main bearer of chemical energy in the cell. He coins the phrase "energy-rich phosphate bonds".
Alexander Todd synthesised ATP chemically. Slater formulated a scheme involving chemical intermediates to explain the mechanism of oxidative phosphorylation Slater, E.C. (1953) Nature 172, 975-978. Nobel Laureate to Share Experiences with Students
Nobel Laureate Paul D. Boyer, who was awarded the prize in chemistry in 1997, will talk about the work that won him the honor on Thursday, Nov. 19, at Cal State Northridge. Boyer will discuss his pioneering research related to the mechanism of energy metabolism in cells and how his efforts were initially ignored by his peers. His seminar, "A Research Journey," will take place from 2 to 3 p.m. in Engineering Room 100 near the center of the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St., Northridge. "It is a pleasure to have Professor Boyer visit our campus, and show students by his example how exciting and interesting doing science is,' said Edward J. Carroll, Jr., dean of the CSUN's College of Science and Mathematics. "Dr. Boyer's field, biochemistry, relates to energy metabolism and has many applications to everyday life." Boyer, professor emeritus from UCLA's Biochemistry Department, shares the 1997 Nobel Prize with two other scientists for work based on his research into the action of the enzyme responsible for the synthesis of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). His work relates to the synthesis of ATP in mitochondria, the so-called powerhouse of cells. Press Releases

President William Jefferson Clinton The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20502 Dear Mr. President: We urge you not to make the decision to deploy an anti-ballistic missile system during the remaining months of your administration. The system would offer little protection and would do grave harm to this nation's core security interests. We and other independent scientists have long argued that anti-ballistic missile systems, particularly those attempting to intercept reentry vehicles in space, will inevitably lose in an arms race of improvements to offensive missiles. North Korea has taken dramatic steps toward reconciliation with South Korea. Other dangerous states will arise. But what would such a state gain by attacking the United States except its own destruction? While the benefits of the proposed anti-ballistic missile system are dubious, the dangers created by a decision to deploy are clear. It would be difficult to persuade Russia or China that the United States is wasting tens of billions of dollars on an ineffective missile system against small states that are unlikely to launch a missile attack on the U.S. The Russians and Chinese must therefore conclude that the presently planned system is a stage in developing a bigger system directed against them. They may respond by restarting an arms race in ballistic missiles and having missiles in a dangerous "launch-on-warning" mode.

110 Nobel Prize Winners Look Ahead
On the 100th Anniversary of the Nobel Prize. Dateline Stockholm; December 11, 2001. The attached Statement was released as 150 Nobel Laureates gathered in Stockholm, Sweden, and Oslo, Norway, for an unprecedented celebration marking the 100th Anniversary of the Nobel Prize. (The prize winners in Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Literature and Economics meet in Stockholm where their prizes were awarded, and, correspondingly, the Peace Prize winners meet in Oslo.) In brief, the Statement warns that the world may explode into war if modern weapons continue to spread, and environmental strains remain unchecked. It stresses that we shall not have enduring peace until we address the twin scourges of poverty and oppression, and calls for a new sense of global responsibility. It hardly need be said that the signatories make no claim to oracular status, but offer their views as a group of concerned citizens.
