'All of us know something of that feeling of humility in the presence of greatness thing when we venture to ask a question of Nature herself. When we begin to venture to assemble the instruments, quite simple they may be, with which we hope to enquire into that which is yet unknown, we feel a certain shame at our temerity and perhaps would begin our work alone. 'It is the task of the researcher to describe what he observes so faithfully that his hearers also see the vision. He must serve them for their eyes, if they themselves are not trained to use them.'
William Henry Bragg
, the eldest of three boys, was born on 2 July 1862 in Cumberland, England. His father was a naval captain. In 1869 William Bragg's mother died; she was only thirty-six years old, and he was just seven. From this time on, he lived with his Uncle William, a chemist who ran a pharmacy, and was a major influence on the young William Bragg. William Bragg entered Cambridge University in 1881, following his obsession with mathematics. He tended to be reclusive, and called himself 'unadventuresome, shy and ignorant'. Despite his shyness, William Bragg loved his life at Cambridge University. After finishing his mathemetics studies, he turned his attention to physics and worked at the Cavendish Laboratory during part of 1885. At the end of this year, he applied for and was appointed to the position of Professor of Mathematics and Physics at the University of Adelaide, South Australia. Surprisingly, this application and appointment took place all within the space of just over one week! Three weeks later, William Bragg left for Australia.

Coda: "A Very Pleasant Climax" 4. Sir William Lawrence Bragg Pauling's only real competitor in the field of discovering the structure of complex molecules was Sir William Lawrence Bragg, English Nobel laureate and leader of the laboratory in which Watson and Crick toiled. Bragg and Pauling had competed for scientific priority several times since the late 1920s, when they vied to be the first to publish the structures of large inorganic molecules like silicates (Pauling took the prize); and again for the structure of basic protein components (Pauling won again in 1951). Their competition was low-key and polite, but pointed. Bragg was a quiet man. He had won his Nobel Prize at a very early age for work with his father on x-ray crystallography. He was head of one of Britain's leading laboratories, the Cavendish at Cambridge. He had little to prove. But he, like Pauling, had become fascinated with the molecular structures of large biomolecules, and had a large, well-equipped team working on proteins, including the eminent researchers Max Perutz and John Kendrew (in whose laboratory Watson, Crick and Peter Pauling worked). They had all been galled when Pauling beat them to the alpha helix. Bragg was weary of coming in second.

Sir Lawrence Bragg, 1962 Camera Press in full SIR WILLIAM LAWRENCE BRAGG (b. March 31, 1890, Adelaide, S.Aus., Australiad. July 1, 1971, Ipswich, Suffolk, Eng.), Australian-born British physicist and X-ray crystallographer, discoverer (1912) of the Bragg law of X-ray diffraction, which is basic for the determination of crystal structure. He was joint winner (with his father, Sir William Bragg ) of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1915. He was knighted in 1941. Bragg was the eldest child of Sir William Bragg. His maternal grandfather, Sir Charles Todd, was postmaster general and government astronomer of South Australia. Educated at St. Peter's College, Adelaide, and then at Adelaide University, Bragg gained high honours in mathematics at an age when most boys were still in secondary school. In 1909 he went to England to enter Trinity College, Cambridge. He began the study of physics, which he had not studied earlier, although he had taken some chemistry. During the summer vacation of 1912, his father discussed with him a recent book on the work of the German physicist Max von Laue, who asserted that X rays could be diffracted by passing them through crystals. Upon his return to Cambridge, young Bragg, believing that Laue's explanation was incorrect in detail, carried out a series of ingenious original experiments, as the result of which he published the Bragg equation, which tells at what angles X rays will be most efficiently diffracted by a crystal when the X-ray wavelength and distance between the crystal atoms are known (

Bragg, Sir William,
Sir William Bragg By courtesy of the Nobelstiftelsen, Stockholm in full SIR WILLIAM HENRY BRAGG (b. July 2, 1862, Wigton, Cumberland, Eng.d. March 12, 1942, London), pioneer British scientist in solid-state physics who was a joint winner (with his son Sir Lawrence Bragg ) of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1915 for his research on the determination of crystal structures. He was knighted in 1920. William Bragg came on his father's side from a family without academic traditions, mainly yeoman farmers and merchant seamen. His mother was the daughter of the local vicar. Upon her death, when he was barely seven, he went to live with two paternal uncles who had set up a pharmacy and grocery shop in Market Harborough, Leicestershire. There he attended an old school reestablished by one of his uncles. He did well, and in 1875 his father sent him to school at King William College, Isle of Man. At first he found it difficult to adjust himself, but he was good at his lessons and at sports and finally became head boy. During his last year, however, the school was swept by a storm of religious emotionalism. The boys were frightened by the stories of hellfire and eternal damnation, and the experience left a strong mark on Bragg. Later he wrote, "It was a terrible year . . . for many years the Bible was a repelling book, which I shrank from reading." And in a lecture, Science and Faith at Cambridge in 1941, he said, "I am sure that I am not the only one to whom when young the literal interpretation of Biblical texts caused years of acute misery and fear." On the other hand, he attributed his clear, balanced style of writing to his early grounding in the Authorized (King James) Version of the Bible; in
