Willy Brandt 1913 - 1992 Willy Brandt, Mayor of Berlin, Chancellor of Germany and Nobel Peace Prize winner, died in October 1992 having presided over the Socialist International for sixteen very fruitful years. As a tribute to him on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of his death Socialist Affairs reprints these excerpts from his speeches and writings over the years which illustrate his political thought and his commitment to the Socialist International. "After staring into the abyss of a global war we found ourselves beset by problems of global dimensions: hunger, the population explosion, environmental hazards, and the dwindling of natural resources. Only those who accept or even look forward with pleasure to the end of the world can ignore problems of such magnitude." "As a democratic socialist my thoughts and my work are orientated to change. Not that I want to remodel man, for to force him into a system means to destroy him, but I believe in the changeability of human conditions." "Circumstances, my office, and also, I am sure, the experiences of my youth, gave me a chance - first as Mayor of Berlin, then as Foreign Minister and as Federal Chancellor - to reconcile the idea of Germany with the idea of peace in the minds of large parts of the world. After all that had happened, that was no small matter, particularly since history has caused hatred to build up, but at the same time has shown that the Germans as much as anyone have a part to play in European peace.

Address
by Federal President Johannes Rau
on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the death of Willy Brandt
Berlin, 8 October 2002
I.
2002 is the first year since 1958 in which no headline about Willy Brandt has appeared in the newspaper "Bild". For more than fifty years he has wielded an influence on the headlines and reports of more than just this newspaper - and that nearly ten years after his death. It is well worth reading back over these headlines. Of course there are some disturbing items among them - otherwise the "Bild"-newspaper would not be the "Bild"-newspaper. Nevertheless the significant stages of post-war German history can be traced - in the career of a politician who has left an impression on Germany like no other. In the years since his death, the headlines which speak of Willy Brandt or refer to him have become fewer. In 2001 a biography about him is mentioned. Willy Brandt has become a part of history and an historic person. Now that sounds all too self-evident: Who among us had not already known during Willy Brandt's lifetime that the man who made German and European policy was an historic personality? However, we who knew him well and to whom he is still so completely vivid have to make it clear to ourselves that Willy Brandt has also become a part of history in a different sense.

Willy Brandt is the adopted name of Herbert Ernst Karl Frahm. Born in December 1913 to an unwed Lubeck shopgirl, he was raised by his maternal grandfather to be a fervent blue-collar socialist. As a teenager Brandt first joined the Socialist Party of Germany (SPD) in 1930, but one year later switched to a more radical spin-off, the SAP. In 1933, to escape arrest by the Gestapo, he changed his name to Willy Brandt and fled to Scandinavia where he was active as a journalist and in anti-fascist movements.
In 1945 / 46 he worked as a correspondent in Germany for Scandinavian newspapers and then became press officer at the Norwegian Mission in Berlin. Brandt was persuaded by fellow Social Democrats to apply for reinstatement of his German citizenship, which had been lifted by the Nazis in 1938.
Brandt, who is thin-skinned and sensitive, has often been called a "traitor" in West Germany for fleeing during the Nazi years. Brandt declares: "I did not regard my fate as an exile as a blot on my copybook, but rather as a chance to serve the 'Other Germany,' which did not resign itself submissively to enslavement."
In 1949 he was elected a member of the first parliament of the post-war West Germany that convened in Bonn. A fierce anti-communist and pragmatic socialist, Brandt quickly made a name for himself in the SPD serving as editor-in-chief of the social democratic Berliner Stadtblatt. In 1957 the SPD chose him as its candidate for the office of Governing Mayor in West Berlin.

    Willy Brandt

Willy Brandt (born Herbert Ernst Karl Frahm) was the fourth Federal Chancellor (first social democrat) of the Federal Republic of Germany from 1969 to 1974. His reputation as a peace-maker reached its high point in 1971 when he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. But Brandt remained a controversial figure in his native Germany. In 1972 he received a vote of no confidence in the Bundestag, mainly because of his policies for dealing with the East. After leaving office, he remained active on the international stage and welcomed the union of the two German states. Brandt died 8.10.1992 in Unkel on the Rhine.

During an official visit as chancellor of West Germany to Poland in 1971, Brandt won the praise and respect of the whole world as he knelt in front of the monument built to the memory of Poles fallen as victims of the Nazis. (Contributed by T. W. Kwan) About Willi Brandt THE GERMAN GOVERNMENT HAS DECLARED JANUARY 27TH A NATIONAL DAY OF REMEMBRANCE FOR THE VICTIMS OF THE HOLOCAUST IN WORLD WAR TWO. German president Roman Herzog said the observance of what is being called the "Day of Remembrance of the Victims of National Socialism" is meant to express sorrow for suffering and loss, to remember the victims and to guard against renewal of Nazism. In a statement issued Wednesday in Bonn, the president said the Nazi terror must never be forgotten. He added, the memory must also remind future generations to be watchful. The date was chosen to mark January 27th, 1945, the day Soviet soldiers liberated the Auschwitz concentration camp. The day will not be a public holiday, but will be marked in schools. Germany's Bundestag, the lower house of parliament, also plans a special commemoration to mark the national day.
