The Nobel Prize
In October, the Norwegian Nobel Institute announced the 2001 Nobel Prize winners for Literature, Economics, Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, and Peace. The awards will be presented at a ceremony in Oslo, Sweden on Monday, December 10. This year's ceremony marks the centennial year of the Nobel Prizes, awarded to those who, in the words of founder Alfred Nobel, "have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind." The prize consists of a medal, a personal diploma, and a prize amount. In this week's online lesson you will learn about the men who were awarded Nobel Prizes for 2001, about the men and women who have been awarded prizes in the past, and about founder Alfred Nobel.
Nobel e-Museum
Begin this week's lesson by paying a visit to the Nobel e-Museum , the official web site of the Nobel Foundation which administers and manages the assets for the awarding of the Nobel Prizes. When the page opens you will see a list of the 2001 Laureates (winners) in each of the six categories. We'll get to them in a minute. First explore the links for each of the prize categories along the top navigation bar.

The Discovery Of Fullerenes
The Discovery of Fullerenes touches on a number of themes in science and the process of scientific discovery, each of which may be expanded upon into further explorations and research projects. Electron micrographs of nanotubes Molecular Structure A single element may exist in two or more molecular forms that have very different properties. Graphite and diamond have been known for millennia and were thought to be the only two molecular forms of carbon. Fullerenes and nanotubes are the newly discovered forms of carbon that are the focus of our article. There are other elements that are found in multiple forms, known as allotropes. If you heat powdered sulfur until it melts and then let it cool slowly you will get a hard substance. But if you pour the melted sulfur into cold water it will quickly cool into a soft rubbery material.

Bardeen (John) , fisico americano (1908-1991).

American mathematician who was awarded the Fields Medal in 1970 for his work in group theory, solving (with Walter Feit) one of its thorniest problems, the so-called "odd order" problem. (Group theory is a branch of mathematics that focuses on the study of symmetries - such as the symmetries of a geometric figure, or symmetries that arise in solutions to algebraic equations.) Thompson's proof, with 253 pages of equations, filled an entire issue of the Pacific Journal of Mathematics. It stands out as one of math’s longest and most complex. Thompson also collaborated on the classification of the finite simple groups, the building blocks of more general groups. Group theory has important applications in physics, chemistry and other fields. W. Z. Ripley Born 13 Oct 1867; died 16 Aug 1941.
W(illiam) Z(ebina) Ripley was an American economist and anthropologist whose early book The Races of Europe: A Sociological Study (1899) directed the attention of American social scientists to the existence of subdivisions of geographic races. He gave broad classifications of the European Caucasians into three local races: the northern (Teutonic) and southern (Mediterranean) populations are probably of extremely ancient origin, but the central (Alpine) group has descended from more recent migrants from Asia. Ripley was trained in civil engineering, though he spent most of his career as professor of political economy. In 1920-23 he drew up for the Interstate Commerce Commission the Ripley Plan for the regional consolidation of U.S. railways.

Born 10 Feb 1902; died 13 Oct 1987.
Walter Houser Brattain was an American scientist born in China who, with John Bardeen and William B. Shockley , won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1956 for investigating semiconductors (materials of which transistors are made) and for the development of the transistor. At college, he said, he majored in physics and math because they were the only subjects he was good at. He became a solid physicist with a good understanding of theory, but his strength was in physically constructing experiments. Working with the ideas of Shockley and Bardeen, Brattain's hands built the first transistor. Shortly, the transistor replaced the bulkier vacuum tube for many uses and was the forerunner of microminiature electronic parts. Richard Dagobert Brauer Born 10 Feb 1901; died 17 Apr 1977.
