Volume 2, number 1 contains the following:
Twenty Years of Irish Studies at Boston College
Co-directors Kevin O'Neill (left) and Adele Dalsimer
with Michael Yeats and former Irish Taoiseach Garrett
Fitzgerald in June 1998. The Fall semester of 1977 saw Kevin O'Neill arrive at Boston College from Brown University. As an Irish historian, O'Neill's scholarship and publications were in the social history of pre-famine Ireland, but he also brought with him a keen interest in Irish literature. In his new acedemic home, O'Neill encouraged Adele Dalsimer, a dynamic young scholar in the English department, whose interests were in the diverse literature of Ireland, especially the writings of William Butler Yeats and James Joyce. The two Americans shared their enthusiasm of Irish history, literature and culture and both understood how their fields of study could complement each other if presented in interdisciplinary courses. O'Neill and Dalsimer began working together and encouraged colleagues within the university to offer innovative Irish courses that would both challenge and reward students. Their first collaboration was a "team taught" course entitled The Politics and Literature of Irish Freedom. This venture was so successful that soon O'Neill and Dalsimer were conspiring to bring Irish poets, historians, artists, writers, politicians, film makers and musicians to campus. The fees paid to these guests were modest but the visitors enjoyed coming to Boston College and recognized that something quite special was developing. The names of some of these early visitors include Heaney, Muldoon, Boland, Mac Bride, O Suilleabh‡in, Fitzgerald, Hume and Haughey. Although Irish Studies started out with a small budget, its efforts were constantly supported by the Friends of Irish Studies and nurtured by the university president, Donald Monan S.J., and Academic Vice President, William Neenan S.J. In the twenty years since the Irish Studies Program was first launched, it has blossomed into arguably the finest program in North America.

    Chapter One: Cry Havoc
"I've been thinking," Adam Piersen observed from flat on his back in the window seat of Duncan MacLeod's sunny study. Across the room at his large desk, the Highlander looked up through his bushy dark eyebrows from the mountain of bills and reports and post-wedding paperwork, still undone, now four weeks past the fact. "Should I be calling out the guard, or will a simple post to The Crown Authority do for now? I can ring up the Nobel Committee as soon as I'm done with some of these bills," he suggested to his new husband. Well, officially new, in actuality they'd been togetherbut for one rough spotever since his son's, Sean MacLeod's, birth, two decades ago. When Adam did not answer, Duncan prompted, "You were thinking?" "Oh, yes" Adam rolled languorously to his side and propped his head up on his lean arm and long fingers. "We've grown soft, Highlander. Soft and out of practice in the manly art." Duncan chewed on the end of his pen and then counted, absent-mindedly, on his fingers, then entered the sum. "Well, I'll grant we've yet to try your chandelier trick," Duncan counted again and put the next sum in the ledger. He knew there were machines for this, but it was a good discipline, and so much had changed in his life of late, he wanted to keep some things as they were. "But I thought whatever that was this morning was fairly well done," he thought a moment and nodded his head, "Well done, indeed."

Another 'Sundays at Noon' concert. First we get a marimba solo. Always feel a bit sorry for marimba players, that their cheap parents were too scungy to buy them real instruments. Then a violin and piano bit, all atonal arythmic crap, flashy and smartarse playing though. Next, the soprano. I have no idea what she's singing about. The cellist is good though.
Outside, in Bride Street, the local boyos have gotten hold of skyrockets. And Father Comisky has been nominated for Irishman of the Year, despite having been dragged through the press, and is currently checked into some American rehab program for his alcoholism. Or maybe there's more than one Father Comisky. Monday 2/10 The GPO. No rebellions in progress. I feel vaguely disappointed.

Plus, this comment on LGF brings us the following funny joke: The other night I was watching Robin Williams on the Charlie Rose show. Also of St. Andronicus, patron of goldsmiths. National day of Uganda (see 1963 below), On this day in 1002, Leif Erikson landed in North America. The Florentine artist died on this day in 1469 in his early 60s. The teacher of Boticelli, he was known for his madonnas and religious murals, Taking his lead from Vasari’s Lives of the Painters, Browning depicted him in a famous dramatic monologue as a man of this world concerned with capturing worldly, not other-worldly, passions. On this day in 1635, colonial American Separatist Roger Williams was banished from Massachusetts for preaching that civil government had no right to interfere in religious affairs because he had spoken out against punishments for religious offenses and giving away land that belonged to the Indians. Williams had founded Providence, Rhode Island, as a place for people to seek religious freedom. Williams was seeking to establish freedom of worship through the separation of church and state.
