Pearl Sydenstricker Buck
Pearl S. Buck was born June 26, 1892 to Absalon and Caroline Sydenstricker in Hillsboro, West Virginia. Pearl was the fourth of seven children. Her parents were both Southern Presbyterian missionaries who moved their family to an assignment in China when Pearl was only four months old. Pearl spent most of her first 40 years in China in the town of Kiangsu where she was taught by her mother and tutor, Mr. Kung. She was a good student and spoke both Chinese and English fluently.
In 1910 she enrolled in Randolph-Macon College in Lynchburg, Virginia. She chose this college because the female students had responsibilites and expectations close to what was expected of male students at the time. In the early 1900's, women in college were often expected to be there to search for a husband rather than learning. Pearl had a somewhat difficult time from the start since she had refused to go to a southern finishing school. Throughout her college experience her minimal understanding of American culture caused problems. However, she stayed active and was involved with student government, the YMCA, and wrote for the college's literary magazine and yearbook. After college, she moved back to China which she considered her true home. In 1917 she married John Lossing Buck, an agricultural economist who was doing missionary work. Both he and Pearl spent time in Nanking working as teachers. In 1921 Pearl's mother died which saddened her deeply. To add to her tragedy in this period, she had a child, Carol, who was profoundly retarded and was found to be a victim of PKU, a metabolic disease. Later she was found to have a uterine tumor. She was eventually institutionalized in New Jersy. In 1925, the Bucks adopted a child named Janice.

Pearl S. Buck (1892-1973), the first American woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize for literature, was born Pearl Sydenstricker in Hillsboro, West Virginia. Her parents were missionaries who took her at the age of three months to live in China in the city of Chinkiang on the Yangtze River. At seventeen she returned to the United States to attend Randolph-Macon Women's College in Virginia, where as a senior she won a literary prize for the best short story. After graduation she returned to China in 1914 to nurse her mother through a serious illness. Three years later she married her first husband, and in 1921 the Bucks moved to Nanking. Both began teaching at various universities where innovative ideas from the West were starting to change the country's traditional culture.

Buck, the most distinguished descendant of two outstanding familiesthe Stulting and Sydenstricker families. This house was built by the Stulting family who emigrated from Holland to America in 1847 and who lived here on a sixteen acre farm. On June 26, 1892, the birth of Pearl Comfort Sydenstricker took place here. Later, writing under her married name of Pearl S. Buck, she won the hearts of Americans with her famous novel, THE GOOD EARTH, for which she won the PULITZER PRIZE FOR LITERATURE in 1932. For the high quality of her literary work, she was awarded the NOBEL PRIZE FOR LITERATURE in 1938. Pearl Buck was the first American woman to ever receive both of these awards. On June 24, 1983, the Pearl Buck U.S. Postal Stamp was issued at Hillsboro as a tribute to this great lady. Today the Birthplace is a fine historic house museum of 1892 where guides greet you and lead you through period rooms containing some of the original furniture and memorabilia of Pearl S. having said that,
the 'Nobel Literature Prize' site does have her acceptance lecture. (www.nobel.org)
One may glean quite a good amount of information about the 'Chinese Novel's ' influence on her. do consider how her personal life and faith influenced her reading of the Chinese people.
her ability to portray the Chinese and Westerners without excessively value-judging the cultural inclinations of either party is remarkable. then there's the rest of this message:
for a generation of Americans, Pearl Buck "created" China in the same way Charles Dickens "created" Victorian England (see note 3). Yet in the four editions of John Fairbank’s United States and China, the book is not mentioned(see note 4). The canon makers have not admitted it to the pantheon of Great American Literature (though it is in the Valhalla of Cliff’s Notes). Buck received the 1938 Nobel prize for a body of work which included The Good Earth (1931) and the twin biographies of her missionary parents; the gatekeepers charged that she couldn’t compare with William Faulkner in the modernist values of stylistic complexity, irony, and moral ambiguity. Jonathan Spence’s survey of influential Western writing on China does not mention the book’s strengths, but comments (fairly enough) on the book’s "oddly archaic language," which "sought to root China’s contemporary experiences in a timeless zone that has been at the center of so many Western views of China." (see note 5)

One of the most popular writers of her time, Buck wrote over 80 fiction and nonfiction works. Her groundbreaking novel The Good Earth (1931) was a tribute to life in China. "Nothing and no one can destroy the Chinese people," she praised. "They are relentless survivors . They yield, they bend to the wind, but they never break." Buck received the 1938 Nobel Prize "for rich and genuine epic portrayals of Chinese life and for masterpieces of biography." Historian James Thomson called her "the most influential Westerner to write about China since thirteenth-century Marco Polo."
