The Nobel Foundation, using the funds of Alfred Nobel's legacy, has four sections : three Swedish organizations and one Norwegian organization. The Foundation awards Nobel Prizes to "those who have made the greatest contribution to human race during the past year" in the fields of physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, literature, peace and economics. The first Nobel Prize was awarded on the fifth anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death, on December 10, 1901.
