Burnet, Sir Frank Macfarlane
Australian physician, an authority on immunology and viral diseases such as influenza, poliomyelitis, and cholera. He shared the 1960 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with immunologist Peter Medawar for his work on skin grafting.
Burnet was born in E Victoria and studied at Melbourne and London universities. From 1927 he was associated with the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute for Medical Research in Melbourne, becoming its director 1944.
Burnet was the first to investigate the multiplication mechanism of bacteriophages (viruses that attack bacteria) and devised a method for identifying bacteria by the bacteriophages that attack them. In 1932 he developed a technique for growing and isolating viruses in chick embryos; this was to be used as a standard laboratory procedure for more than 20 years.
In 1949 Burnet predicted that an individual's ability to produce a particular antibody to a particular antigen was not innate, but developed during the individual's life. In 1951 Medawar carried out the experiments that confirmed this theory.

SIR MACFARLANE BURNET, AT 85; WON NOBEL FOR MEDICINE IN '60
Author: Associated Press Date: Tuesday, September 3, 1985
Page:
Section:
OBITUARY Sir MacFarlane Burnet, Australia's only Nobel laureate for medicine, has died at his son's home in Port Fairy, western Victoria. He was 85. Sir MacFarlane, who died Saturday, was born Frank MacFarlane Burnet in Traralgon, eastern Victoria, the second of six children. He won the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1960 for his work in immunology. Sir MacFarlane studied the nature of antibody formation and immune processes and developed the notion of immunological tolerance to explain why humans do not form antibodies to their own bodily constituents. He also wrote about how mistakes of the immune system might cause obscure forms of blood, liver and kidney disease. From the early 1930s to the late 1950s, Sir MacFarlane was a leader in the science of virology, pioneering the use of fertile hen's eggs as hosts for virus multiplication. He developed concepts that are part of the basis for current theories about viruses as cancer-causing agents. At age 14, Sir MacFarlane went to Geelong College, and won a residential scholarship to Melbourne University's Ormond College. He graduated second in his class.

Title: MATTERS OF PUBLIC IMPORTANCE: Research and Development: Policy Date: 29 August 2000 Database: House Hansard Speaker: Jenkins, Harry, MP (Scullin, ALP) Mr JENKINS (Scullin) (4.17 p.m.) —From the outset, the Minister for the Arts and the Centenary of Federation doubted the sincerity of the opposition in putting this matter of public importance forward. He can be assured that this subject will be a matter that the opposition will return to from now until the election. We have been in the forefront of putting to the Australian public the fact that we will be looking towards putting in place policies that look to Australia truly being looked at as a knowledge nation. Australia has a proud tradition in science. In fact, the very first Australian of the Year, in 1960, was not a sporting hero but a Nobel laureate in medicine, Sir Frank Macfarlane Burnet. Along with Macfarlane Burnet, a number of other famous scientists have also been acknowledged as Australian of the Year. We had Sir John Eccles in 1963, another Nobel laureate in medicine; Sir John Cornforth in 1975, a Nobel laureate in chemistry; and, of course, in 1997, Professor Peter Doherty, our latest Nobel laureate in science. The current Australian of the Year is Sir Gustav Nossal, a very distinguished scientist in the field of immunology. Howard Florey was honoured in 1945 for his work in the discovery of penicillin. As I said, Australian Peter Doherty was awarded a Nobel prize in 1996. It is a fine tradition that is under enormous attack by the actions, and in some cases inaction, of the Howard government.

History
A Brief History of The Geelong College
The first Principal was Mr George Morrison, MA, a graduate of the University of Aberdeen and a man of outstanding scholastic and business ability. After three years the committee assigned the College to the ownership of Mr Morrison.
Mr George Morrison
In 1871 the school moved into its new, purpose-built building on an initial six acre site on Newtown Hill - now the Senior School campus. The 1871 building was designed by the prominent Geelong and Western District architects Davidson and Henderson in a style known as Victorian Eclectic. It incorporates Gothic and Italianate motifs. Subsequent buildings, up to the present, reflect the various styles of the time, but subsequent College Architects, Lt Col F. C. Purnell, Mr Philip Hudson and for the last 40 years, McGlashan Everist have succeeded in achieving a harmony and integrity of style throughout the Senior School.
Mr George Morrison presided over the College from 1861 until 1898. In 1891 the University of Aberdeen recognised his work in education by conferring upon him the degree of Doctor of Laws. In 1898, Dr Morrison was succeeded by his son, Mr Norman Morrison, who remained Headmaster until his accidental death in 1909. In 1908, after 44 years as a privately owned school, the College was transferred back to the Presbyterian Church and governed by a Council set up by the Church. In 1908 the College became a member of the Associated Public Schools of Victoria.

Born 3 Sep 1907; died 9 Jul 1977.
Loren (Corey) Eiseley was a U.S. anthropologist, educator, and was one of the preeminent literary naturalists of our time. He wrote for the lay person in eloquent, poetic style about anthropology, the history of the civilatization and our relationship with the natural world. Scientific American published Loren Eisleys' first popular essay, The Folsum Mystery (1942) . Eiseley's best-known book, The Immense Journey , combines science and humanism in a collection of essays, many with origins to his own early Nebraska experiences . Eiseley became known internationally, winning major prizes and honorary degrees for his unique work. Carl David Anderson

Born 3 Sep 1905; died 11 Jan 1991.
American physicist who, with Victor Francis Hess of Austria, won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1936 for his discovery of the positron, or positive electron, the first known particle of antimatter. He examined the photographs of cosmic rays taken as they passed through a Wilson cloud chamber in a strong magnetic field. Besides the curved paths of negative electrons, he found also paths deviating in the opposite direction, corresponding to positively charged particles - yet having the the same mass as an electron! Previously, Dirac had predicted such particles by theoretical solution to electromagnetic field equations. Anderson has now found the existance of positron. Sir Macfarlane Burnet

AUGUST 31 - BIRTHS Robert Hanbury Brown Born 31 Aug 1916
British astronomer and writer noted for his design, development, and use of the intensity interferometer. During and after WW II he worked with R.A. Watson-Watt and then E.G. Bowen to develop radar and its uses in aerial combat. In the 1950s he applied his experience with radar to radio astronomy, developing radio-telescope technology at Jodrell Bank Observatory and mapping radio sources in the sky. This work led him to design a radio interferometer capable of resolving radio stars while eliminating atmospheric distortion from the image (1952). With R.Q. Twiss, Brown applied the principles of radio interferometry to measuring the angular size of bright visible stars, thus developing the technique of intensity interferometry. Brown and Twiss set up an intensity interferometer at Narrabri in New South Wales, Australia, for the measuring of hot stars. Sir Bernard Lovell Born 31 Aug 1913
