III. Alfred Nobel And The Nobel Prizes Alfred Nobel is the man who invented dynamite. He is better known today, however, as the man who established some of the most prestigious prizes in the world. Born in 1833 in Stockholm, Sweden, Nobel from his youth had a dream of inventing an explosive so devastating it would deter humans from making war. Instead, his invention made war easier. Though he was a Swede by birth, he was very much an international man, being educated in St. Petersburg, Russia, where his family moved when he was a child. In St. Petersburg, he studied with private tutors, particularly showing interest in chemistry and languages. He mastered Swedish, Russian, English, French, and German. At the age of 17 he began two years of educational travel throughout Germany, France, Italy and to the United States. Then at the age of 19 he became a chemist, working with his father in St. Petersburg. The family returned to Sweden and in 1863 he was a chemist in his father's explosives factory at Heleneborg near Stockholm. In 1864 Nobel received a patent covering detonating charges and percussion caps. Called "The Nobel Igniter," it was to be called at a later time "the greatest discovery ever made in both the principle and practice of explosives." His 1866 invention of dynamite revolutionized mining, road building and tunnel blasting. In 1875 a later improvement was patented as blasting gelatine. In 1887 he patented ballistite, the first of the nitroglycerine smokeless powders. This was to serve as the basis for cordite which was eventually to change the use of firearms.

Aleichem, Sholom
(1859-1916). Russian born author. Aleichem produced over 40 volumes of stories, plays and poems in Yiddish and was the first author to write in Yiddish for children. Called the "Jewish Mark Twain," Aleichem's works have been widely translated.
Autograph Letter Signed ("Sh. Aleichem") . In Russian. Two pages, small octavo, "Somewhere between Vilnius and Minsk," July 6/7, 1905. To P.S. and L. T. Levin. Two horizontal mailing folds, some soiling at center fold. Overall in fine condition.
Filled with puns, double meanings and jokes, this letter reads like one of Aleichem's stories! He writes about travel, clothes, his child and friends. The centerpiece of the letter revolves around Aleichem's difficulty reaching the Osipoviches; "Such is the fate of the editor of a Jewish newspaper! There is no Osipoviches on the map or in geography. Only one cashier found a ticket there, and, issuing the above looked me searchingly over...I am dreaming of how I will arrive at these Osipoviches, how the Osipoviches will greet me, how I will destroy them, these Osipoviches, to the devil."

Burroughs, Edgar Rice
(1875-1950) American novelist and science fiction author, known the world over as the creator of "Tarzan."
Typed Letter Signed (" Edgar Rice Burroughs "). One page, large octavo, Reseda, California, July 31, 1928. On Edgar Rice Burroughs letterhead. To Ida Corey. Transmittal envelope included, as is a small printed pamphlet "The Novels of Edgar Rice Burroughs". Two horizontal folds, very minor surface soil, minor adhesive residue on verso. Very good to fine condition.
As is the case in a few of this collector's items, the addressee has to correct some of her mistakes and we wonder if Burroughs got the chuckle out of this that we did. "Your letter addressed to John Burroughs, Tarzana Ranch, Reseda California, was opened by my son, John Burroughs, when it was intended for the late John Burroughs, the naturalist...John Burroughs did not write the Tarzan stories. I am returning your letter herewith."
Estimated Value $125-150.
