A summary of this manual recast with additions, appeared under the title . (Elements of histology, etc.), 1897; Manual de (Manual of general pathological anatomy), 1890 (3rd ed., 1900).

Ramon y Cajal, Santiago 1852-1934, Spanish histologist. He was a university professor at Valencia (1881-86), at Barcelona (1886-92), and at Madrid (1892-1922), where he founded the Cajal Institute. He described the terminal branchings of neurons, devised a method of staining nerve tissues, and made numerous discoveries in the structure of the nervous system. For this work he shared with Camillo Golgi the 1906 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. His works include Studies of the Degeneration and Regeneration of the Nervous System (tr. 1928) and the classic Histology (tr. 1933). See his autobiography (tr. 1937, repr. 1966); biography by D. F. On December 6, 1883 he obtained the degree of Doctor of Medicine at Madrid, after having been the day before unanimously nominated Professor of Descriptive and General Anatomy at Valencia. In 1887, after an examination, he was nominated Professor of Histology and Pathological Anatomy at Barcelona and in 1892 he was appointed to the same Chair at Madrid. In 1902 he was appointed Director of the «Investigaciones Biologicas» and of the «Instituto Nacional de Higiene».

It gives you a sense of history, as some of the scientific terms are not used much any more, and the descriptions of their contributions to neuroscience is very lucid and eloquent. Below are the Nobel Laureates discussed in class. For this they were awarded the Nobel Prize in 1906.

In the hands of innumerable neurohistologists this method has been admirably fruitful since its introduction by Camillo Golgi (1873) and continues to be widely used. Golgi and Ramon y Cajal were jointly awarded the Nobel prize for medicine in 1906, for their contributions to understanding the cellular structure of the brain using this method. The classical Golgi impregnation method is very elegant in its simplicity:
  • Immerse a block (approx. 10x5 mm) of formol-fixed (or paraformaldehyde- glutaraldehyde-pefused) brain tissue into a 2% aqueous solution of potassium dichromate for 2 days
