Nobel Prize Winning Chemists Melvin Calvin The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1961 Melvin Calvin was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, April 8, 1911, of Russian emigrant parents. He received the B.S. degree in Chemistry in 1931 at the Michigan College of Mining and Technology, and the Ph. D. degree in Chemistry from the University of Minnesota in 1935. He has served as director of the big-organic chemistry group in the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory since 1946. This group became the Laboratory of Chemical Biodynamics in 1960. His scientific life began with a thesis on the electron affinity of halogens, done under the direction of Professor George A. Glocker at the University of Minnesota and completed in 1935. The following two-year postdoctoral period was spent with Professor Michael Polanyi at the University of Manchester, at which time his interest in coordination catalysis, particularly metallorporphyrins, was awakened. This interest is still paramount and has resulted both in theoretical and practical applications. He has been the recipient of a number of medals, awards, and lectureships, and holds membership in numerous learned societies. In addition, he has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, that American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Royal Society of London, the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences and Letters, and the German Academy of Scientists, Leopoldina. He holds honorary D. Sc. degrees from Michigan College of Mining and Technology, the University of Nottingham, Oxford University, and Northwestern University.

Melvin Calvin Melvin Calvin is University Professor of Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley, and Director of the Laboratory of Chemical Biodynamics. He is also an Associate Director of the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory. His research has yielded important discoveries over broad areas of physical, organic and biological chemistry, from metal-organic chemistry, the chemical origin of life, photosynthesis, bioenergetics, chemical and viral carcinogenesis and solar energy. His numerous honors include the Nobel Prize in chemistry for his wore on photosynthesis. He was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, April 8, 1911, of Russian immigrant parents. He received his B.S. degree from Michigan College of Mining and Technology (now Michigan Technological University) in 1931, and his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Minnesota in 1935. After postdoctoral study with Professor Michael Polanyi at the University of Manchester in England, he was appointed an instructor in chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1937 and has been a professor since 1947. He married Genevieve Jemtegaard in 1942, and they have three children, two daughters and a son. Calvin studied the physical and chemical properties of organic compounds, writing (with Branch) "The Theory of Organic Chemistry" in 1940 and (with Martell) "The Chemistry of Metal Chelate Compounds" in 1952. His clear understanding of the nature of organic molecules was to prove valuable in his subsequent worn in biological chemistry. He formed the big-organic chemistry group (later expanded to the Laboratory of Chemical Biodynamics) in the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory in 1945. He and his associates used the radioisotope, carbon-14, as a tracer for investigations of complex organic chemical systems and described these techniques in "Isotopic Carbon" (1949).

    Calvin, Melvin (1911-97)
American biochemist at the University of California, Berkeley , who won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry (1961) for his work on photosynthesis . Using carbon-14 as a tracer, Calvin and his team mapped the complete route that carbon takes through a plant. In doing so, he showed that sunlight acts on chlorophyll to fuel the manufacture of organic compounds, rather than on carbon dioxide as had been previously believed. In 1950, Calvin and his associates began pioneering experiments in prebiotic evolution by irradiating a solution of carbon dioxide and water vapor with ionizing radiation from a cyclotron. Simple organic chemicals, including formic acid and formaldehyde were produced-though not amino acids as in the Miller-Urey Experiment , carried out three years later. Calvin's work on prebiotic evolution encouraged him to believe that such processes may have occurred elsewhere in the solar system and on many extrasolar worlds. In 1958, Calvin was appointed chairman of Panel 2 on Extraterrestrial Life , assembled to consider the problems of contamination by spacecraft. It was his opinion that:

    Calvin, Melvin
US chemist who, using radioactive carbon-14 as a tracer, determined the biochemical processes of photosynthesis, in which green plants use chlorophyll to convert carbon dioxide and water into sugar and oxygen. Nobel prize 1961.
Calvin was born in St Paul, Minnesota, and studied at Michigan College of Mining and Technology and the University of Minnesota. From 1937 he was on the staff of the University of California, becoming professor 1947.
Calvin began work on photosynthesis 1949, studying how carbon dioxide and water combine to form carbohydrates such as sugar and starch in a single-celled green alga, Chlorella. He showed that there is in fact a cycle of reactions (now called the Calvin cycle) involving an enzyme as a catalyst

Nobel Chemists Since the last issue of Chemistry in Action! two Nobel chemists have died - Lord Alexander Todd and Melvin Calvin and brief biographies of both men are given below. It's a test of your chemical knowledge as to whether you've heard of them before and at a higher level, whether you know what their main achievements were! I hope the brief obituaries below will enlighten you and you will want to pursue them further..
    Lord Todd 1907-1997
Lord Todd died at the age of 89 on January 10th. 1997. His work laid the foundation for understanding the structure of nucleic acids, which led to Watson and Crick's elucidation of the helical structure of DNA in 1962. Todd won the Nobel prize in Chemistry in 1957 for his work on nucleic acids, including the synthesis of ATP and ADP. One of the Nobel committee members likened him to a bricklayer working with "nature's own bricks".
He was a fellow of the Royal Society from 1942 and President from 1975-1980. He was knighted in 1954, created a life peer in 1962 and appointed to the Order of Merit in 1977. He was Professor of Organic Chemistry at Cambridge from 1944-1971, and Master of Christ';s College. Cambridge from 1963-1978. Prior to Cambridge he had been appointed Samuel Hill Professor of organic Chemistry at Manchester University in 1938, at the age of 29. Todd was a giant in the field of organic chemistry and bestrode it like a colossus for nearly half a century. He also towered physically over smaller people and was thus known affectionately to his students and colleagues as "Todd Almighty".

    Melvin Calvin
    Born 8 Apr 1911; died 8 Jan 1997
Melvin Calvin was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, USA. His parents were Russian immigrants. He went straight from his first science degree to a doctorate and then on to a career in scientific research. He began his most famous work on photosynthesis at the end of the Second World War. The story is that on the day the Japanese surrendered after the dropping of the two atom bombs, Earnest Lawrence told the 34 year old Calvin that it was 'time to do something useful' with all the radioactive carbon-14 he had discovered how to make during the war years. Calvin set up a team of young scientists - at 34 he was about the oldest - and for the first time he got together biologists, chemists and physicists who all worked together contributing different skills to the research. Calvin decided to use carbon-14 isotope as a tracer in the reactions of photosynthesis. It was a very difficult process, because the reactions had to be carried out in living cells. The radioactive tracer in the form of labelled carbon dioxide was given to the plants for a brief time. The plant cells were then killed at various intervals after the labelled gas was given and the labelled chemicals identified. It took years, but eventually Calvin and his team mapped the complete route that carbon travels through a plant during photosynthesis, starting from its absorption as atmospheric carbon dioxide to its conversion into carbohydrates and other organic compounds. The sequence of reactions are called the
