ALBERT CAMUS
"In a universe suddenly divested of illusions and lights, man feels an alien, a stranger. His exile is without remedy since he is deprived of the memory of a lost home or the hope of a promised land. The divorce between man and his life, the actor and his setting, is properly the feeling of absurdity." "To become god is merely to be free on this earth, not to serve an immortal being. Above all, of course,it is drawing all the inferences from that painful independence." - Albert Camus
About Albert Camus (1913-1960) Camus was a French philosophical novelist and essayist who was also a prose poet and the conscience of his times. He was born and raised in Algeria, and his experiences as a fatherless, tubercular youth, as a young playwright and journalist in Algiers, and later in the anti-German resistance in Paris during World War II informed everything he wrote. His best-known writings are not overtly political; his most famous works, the novel The Stranger (written in 1940, published in 1942) and his book-length essay

Combat until 1948, after which he broke his ties with Sartre. His nihilistic novel of 1942, L'Étranger The Stranger ), was "the study of an absurd man in an absurd world." Camus then set himself the task of illuminating new values for twentieth century man confronted by the meaninglessness of existence. His other novels include: The Plague The Rebel The Myth of Sisyphus and Other Essays The Fall Exile and the Kingdom Caligula and Three Other Plays The Possessed (1960) and Resistance, Rebellion, and Death (1961). Camus was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1957. In 1961, he was killed in an automobile accident. From the moment that man submits God to moral judgment, he kills Him in his own heart. And then what is the basis of morality? God is denied in the name of justice, but can the idea of justice be understood without the idea of God? At this point are we not in the realm of absurdity? Absurdity is the concept that Nietzsche meets face to face. In order to be able to dismiss it, he pushes it to extremes: morality is the ultimate aspect of God, which must be destroyed before reconstruction can begin. Then God no longer exists and is no longer responsible for our existence; man must resolve to act, in order to exist. [Source: Albert Camus

The incomplete manuscript of The First Man , the autobiographical novel that Camus was working on at his death, was found in the mud at the accident site and published by his daughter in 1995. Camus hoped that it would be his masterpiece and some critics think it is, even unfinished. Albert Camus, The Outsider Camus' first and most famous novel L'Etranger , translated as The Stranger , or The Outsider , was published on May 19th, 1942, the same year as the movie Casablanca was released. Camus, like Rick, helped with the Resistance movement, and many photographs show him looking like Humphrey Bogart; his book became a cult-classic too, and the best-selling French novel of the 20th century.

The Myth of Sisyphus
Nobel Prize Winners (1957)
Author Info: Albert Camus
It seems to me that one of the central tragedies of the 20th Century is the failure of faith that assailed good men like Albert Camus. It is tragic in the sense that it made their own lives miserable, but also in that someone like Camus used his genius to propound a philosophy that is enormously dangerous in the hands of men who are, unfortunately, not as decent as the author. The danger, as Dostoevsky said in The Brothers Karamazov , is that: If there is no God, everything is permitted. Try as he might, and I believe that his career was essentially one long attempt to do so, Camus was never able to disprove this dictum. Camus begins his essay by stating the proposition that: There is but one truly serious philosophical problem, and that is suicide. Judging whether life is or
is not worth living amounts to answering the fundamental question of philosophy. The Myth of Sisyphus is an admirable attempt to rebuild those foundations, but it's real significance lies in it's very failure to do so. Existentialism, which starts out by denying God, ends by denying Man, and is, therefore, anti-human.

Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech (1957)
Albert Camus
I felt that shock and inner turmoil. In order to regain peace I have had, in short, to come to terms with a too generous fortune. And since I cannot live up to it by merely resting on my achievement, I have found nothing to support me but what has supported me through all my life, even in the most contrary circumstances: the idea that I have of my art and of the role of the writer. Let me only tell you, in a spirit of gratitude and friendship, as simply as I can, what this idea is. Read the complete article at Nobel Prize e-Museum website.

Albert Camus
