  • The Kassins – 1540 until 1916 Descendants of Rabbi Yehuda Kassin
    • Rabbi Bekhor Kassin ... The name Kassin is traced to a long line of rabbinical scholars, as well as to the French wine merchant and Jewish community leader Fedia Jacob Joseph Cassin and French jurist and statesman Rene Samuel Cassin, winner of the 1968 Nobel Peace Prize. The name can be spelled a number of ways, including Cassin, Kassin and Katzen. The Kassins have nearly five centuries of rabbinical and Torah scholars behind them. Indeed, they fulfill the meaning of their ancestral name, Cassin. The Hebrew term Cassin means head of the community. The biblical word refers to captain or judge and occurs often in the Tanach . Kassin pre-dates the 1492 expulsion of the Jews from Spain, indicating the family held positions in Spain as judges and leaders for hundreds of years. The name Kassin was also recorded as a Jewish surname in Vauclause, France in the 14

FERYDON HOVEYDA: MARY GRAY DAVIDSON:
Fifty years ago this month the nations of the world created the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This week on Common Ground , we celebrate this landmark document. BURNS WESTON: There's probably no other international instrument that has had as profound an influence on human affairs worldwide. And when it has its fiftieth birthday it seems like we ought to take notice of that fact. DAVIDSON: Common Ground is a program on world affairs and the people who shape events. It's produced by the Stanley Foundation. I'm Mary Gray Davidson. ELIE WIESEL: I don't think that we should worry more than necessary about everybody becoming an accomplice or a victim of genocide. But we should worry about genocidal trends, genocidal programs.

A Word From the Gallery It's not every day that I post things of a religious context. Honestly, religion and comedy rarely have reason to mix. There aren't too many things within religion or throughout religious history that can make you stand up and say, "Damn that's funny!" Inquisition, not funny. Holocaust, not funny. Jesus on the cross, not funny. Catholic priests abusing young boys, not funny. Catholic priests advertising themselves in naked pictures on the Internet - ok, that's funny. But, sometimes perspective is important. Today, we talk about Muslims and Jews. Now, I'm no expert (ok - I am an expert, but its funnier the other way) but it seems to me that there is a great number of Muslim nations who oppress their people and want the Jews dead. It seems to me, there are a lot of Jews who want to be left alone and go back to their job of being entertainement lawyers and wondering when their daughter is going to find a nice Jewish boy and settle down. And would some grandchildren be too much to ask for while I can still carry them, you know my back goes out and my chronic gout and you don't mind getting me a cup of Sanka do you - not that I want to be a bother.

John Humphrey and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
By Bob Carty, ex Montreal
INTRODUCTION: This week marks the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the United Nations on December 10, 1948. It is not formally a law - just a statement of ideals. 1,771 words in 30 articles. But those thirty articles have become one of the most important statements of our century. The declaration has been called the Magna Carta of humanity. And it has inspired, and continues to inspire, human rights activists across the country and around the world. TAPE: Music/voice/sound effect Mix with the reading of articles of the Universal Declaration by Bishop Desmond Tutu, Muriel Duckworth, Flora MacDonald, Allan Borovoy, and Rosemary Brown. HOST: Those are some of the 30 Articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. For forty years its was assumed that the first draft of those words were written by a French jurist. But that was a historical lie. In fact, the declaration first started taking shape from the pen of a Canadian, the late John Peters Humphrey. Born in New Brunswick, educated at McGill, John Humphrey went on to become the Father of the modern human rights system. As Bob Carty explains in This Morning's feature documentary, John Humphrey infused the declaration with a bit of his own soul, and, despite the obstruction of the Canadian government, with a little bit of the spirit of Canada.
