    The Nobel Peace Prize
October is the month when the names of the Nobel prize winners are made known to the world. The winners are the people who have proved worthy to be honoured that year for their significant contributions in the fields of physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and work for peace. In addition, a Nobel memorial prize was established in 1968 ‹ The Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel. Since 1969, this prize has been awarded at the same time as the five Nobel Prizes. Many other similar prizes are of course given by other institutions all over the world, but the Nobel prizes have maintained a unique position since the first one was awarded in 1901. There are many reasons for this, but probably one of the most important is the general trust in the thoroughness of the investigations and deliberations undertaken by highly qualified persons before each award is made In his will of 1895 Alfred Nobel stipulated that the scientific prizes and the prize for literature should be awarded by Swedish institutions. But the decision regarding the peace prize he left to a committee appointed by the Norwegian parliament, the Storting.

THE UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS
A conversation by e-mail with Mr. John Hobbins by Victor Manta, Fall 1999 Mr. John Hobbins is the historian at McGill University, thanks to whom the true role of Mr. John Peters Humphrey was (re)discovered and recognized. Mr. Hobbins is also the literary executor of Mr. Humphrey. The Beginning Mr. John Hobbins wrote the 10/7/99: "I read your question posed on the web as to the authorship of the first draft of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It was proved in 1988 than John Humphrey did this but for forty years Cassin was given credit because he claimed to have done and people believed him. Proofs provided if you wish.
As for the photograph the Swiss used, it must have been taken before August 1946 when Schmidt was still in the UN Division of Human Rights. None of the people in the photograph except Eleanor Roosevelt, chair of the HRC, and Henri Laugier, Asst. Sec-Gen for Social Affairs, had anything to do with the Declaration." My answer : It is indeed important to establish who wrote the Declaration (even if personally I don't like it - see for reasons the article of Mr. Stevens at

He was vice chair of the Nuclear Committee, and the chief delegate to France in all three sessions. In 1949, Cassin was elected vice chair of the Commission of Human Rights and later on,in 1955, became chair. He also served as a judge on the European Court of Human Rights from 1959 to 1970. During this time Cassin was President of the Court during two periods. He recieved the Nobel Peace Prize in 1968, as a recognition for his work in the drafting of the Declaration of Human Rights Additionally, he was a Zionist. Assessment human rights . For these reasons, the delegates to the Commission on Human Rights selected Cassin to compose the first full draft of the Universal Declaration. This early draft would contain most of the rights and much of the language that would later be set forth in the final document. The failure of the League of Nations to address the human rights situation in Germany prior to World War II was a great disappointment to Cassin. As the Nazis launched their campaign of murder and terror unimpeded by the international community, Cassin became determined that any future organization of nations would have greater strength and courage to fight against violations of human rights. Horrified by emerging news of Nazi atrocities, Cassin spent World War II as a member of the resistance in London, serving as the legal advisor to Charles de Gaulle.
