Cela has explored the way novels are written, but also published non-fiction, such as DICCIONARIO SECRETO (1968-72), a thesaurus of forbidden words end expressions. His works are marked by overtones of existentialism, brutal realism and humor, and experiments with narrative time. In the author's pessimistic world the lives and violent emotions of several hundred personages are mixed together. Cela writes with great detail, describing landscapes and picturesque individuals, giving an aesthetic dimension to reporting. "Through the process of thought man begins to discover hidden truth in the world, he can aim to create his own different world in whatever terms he wishes through the medium of the fable. Thus truth, thought, freedom and fable are interlinked in a complicated and on occasion suspect relationship. It is like a dark passageway with several side-turnings going off in the wrong direction; a labyrinth with no way out. But the element of risk has always been the best justification for embarking on an adventure." (from Nobel Lecture . (Another Spanish Nobel winner

Camilo Jose Cela, the flamboyant Spanish writer who compared winning the Nobel Prize for literature to a game of tennis, has died at the age of 85. Cela, who wrote 10 novels as well as essays, poems and travel books, had been suffering from heart disease. The son of a Spanish father and English mother, Cela was credited with creating the 'tremendismo' style of writing, his straightforward, dark prose contrasting sharply with the lyricism of previous Spanish writers. He served in General Franco's army during the Spanish civil war but later rejected Franco's dictatorial rule, publishing an anti-fascist magazine that became a forum for opposition to the dictatorship. He published his first novel, The Family of Pascal Duarte, when he was just 26 but was best known for The Hive which, published in 1951, drew on his experiences during the civil war and life afterwards under the Franco regime. It was banned in Spain for many years. Cela was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1989 for what the Swedish academy described as his "rich and intensive prose which, with restrained compassion, forms a challenging vision of man's vulnerability". On hearing he had won, Cela modestly said it could have gone to many other Spanish writers and that, like a game of tennis, "this time I won".

CAMILO JOSE CELA: MASTER OF SPANISH PROSE
James Skinner reviews the writer's life
He started reading the Spanish classics based on works of Ortega and Gasset and Rivadeneyra. Although he had had a go unsuccessfully at three different University careers that included Medicine and Law, writing was already flowing through his veins. By the mid-thirties, young Camilo Jose starts to write poetry and enters the realm of intellectuals and other contemporary writers. However, in 1936 the Spanish Civil war breaks out and Camilo Jose is caught up in the conflict fighting for the Nationalists (Franco). He is actually wounded and by the end of the war begins, in earnest, his career as a writer. Post war Madrid will have a lasting effect on the budding author.
The prolific Cela tried his hand at acting, painting, world travel and politics. In 1947 he presented a series of indescribable paintings in Madrid and later in his home country, Corunna. In 1950 he appeared as an actor in a low budget film called The basement, and in 1977, after the death of Franco he was elected to the Spanish Parliament as a senator in the transitional government of Adolfo Suarez. He even had a say in the development of the new Spanish Constitution. It is no surprise that the praises, recognition and awards that followed reflected his varied life achievements.

The Family of Pacual Duarte
Nobel Prize Winners (1989)
Author Info: Camilo Jose Cela
(Translated by Anthony Kerrigan
Second only to the inestimable Don Quixote in the pantheon of Spanish Literature, Cela's Family of Pascual Duarte was published in the same year as The Stranger Albert Camus ) and, treating the same themes, is its superior. Cela was for many years denied the recognition he deserved due to his membership in the Falangist party and his service on Franco's side in the Spanish Civil War, but finally, in 1989, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Pascual Duarte is a brutal Spanish peasant, shaped by poverty, ignorance and hatred. The book recounts his mounting depravity as he goes from killing his dog to knifing a romantic rival to final horrific matricide. Duarte falls prey to the type of alienation and world weariness described by the Existentialists. He describes himself prior to killing his mother: The day I decided I would have to use my knife on her, I was so weary of it all, so convinced in
