Camilo Jose Cela, Spanish novelist who won Nobel Prize, dies at 85
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
MADRID, Spain Camilo Jose Cela, a flamboyant novelist from Spain who won the 1989 Nobel Prize in literature with his crude, straightforward writing style, died yesterday. He was 85.
Cela died from chronic heart disease, Hospital Cemtro in Madrid said.
With his first novel, "The Family of Pascual Duarte," Cela became the leader of an uncommonly straightforward style of writing called "tremendismo" that clashed with the lyricism of previous Spanish writers.
Spanish novelist and essayist Francisco Umbral said Cela's death represented the "disappearance of the last great Spanish writer, creator of fables, of language, of words, with a prodigious capacity of expression."
A bon vivant known in Spain for his flamboyant lifestyle, Cela's writing tended to show a darker side of life. He drew from his experiences in the Spanish Civil War for many of his stories, which were often violent and gruesome. He was recruited as a private to fight on the side of the rebel forces led by the future dictator Gen. Francisco Franco, but was released after receiving serious wounds. He later published an anti-fascist magazine that became a forum for opposition to the 36-year Franco dictatorship.

Cela won the Noble prize for literature in 1989
Nobel prize-winning author Camilo Jose Cela has been accused of relying on ghost-writers. The allegations were made in a new book about the Spanish literary giant, who died in January. Tomas Garcia Yebra's Desmontando Cela (Dismantling Cela) accused the writer of hiring an army of ghost-writers, secretaries and collaborators from as early as the 1950s. He names two of Cela's ghost-writers as Marcial Suarez and Mariano Tudela, both of whom are now dead. Mr Yebra said the two writers lent their talent to Cela's 1951 masterpiece La Colmena (The Hive) and the Planeta prize winning La Cruz de San Andres (St Andrew's Cross). The investigative journalist reached his conclusions after consulting archives and old manuscripts, as well as members of Cela's family, friends and enemies. Plagiarism claims The claims are certain to undermine the Nobel laureate's reputation, already tarnished by a plagiarism lawsuit in his later years.

    Camilo Jose Cela
Spanish writer, 1989 Nobel Prize for Literature, 1916-2002
Things are always best seen when they are a trifle mixed-up, a trifle disordered; the chilly administrative neatness of museums and filing cases, of statistics and cementeries, is an inhuman and antinatural kind of order; it is, in a word, disorder. True order belongs to Nature, which never yet has produced two identical trees or mountains or horses. When debts are not paid because they cannot be paid, the best thing to do is not talk about them, and shuffle the cards again. It is not difficult to write in Spanish; the Spanish language is a gift from the gods which we Spaniards take for granted. I take comfort therefore in the belief that you wished to pay tribute to a glorious language and not to the humble writer who uses it for everything it can express: the joy and the wisdom of Mankind, since literature is an art form of all and for all, although written without deference, heeding only the voiceless, anonymous murmur of a given place and time. The greatest reward is to know that one can speak and emit articulate sounds and utter words that describe things, events and emotions.
