Nobel cheat A literary storm has broken in Spain, where Camilo Jose Cela, winner of the 1989 Nobel Prize for Literature, has been accused of regularly using ghostwriters for most of his career, writes Giles Tremlett he allegations, made by Tomas Garcia Yebra, include not just Cela’s recent works, but stretch back to his early classics. Cela died in January at the age of 85. Cela’s novels The Cross of Saint Andrew and Mazurka for Two Dead Men , which won him, respectively, Spain’s $390 000 Planeta Prize and Spain’s National Literary Prize, had plots and characters supplied by ghostwriters. Cela then transformed the material into his own prose style. “Cela was a great prose writer with an exquisite style, but plots and arguments were not his strong point,” said Yebra. Yebra, a journalist, made his discoveries while researching a book on Cela. The Cross of Saint Andrew was the biggest cheat of all, he claims. A storyline and the main characters were lifted from an unpublished novel that was also entered for the competition. — © Guardian Newspapers 2002

Reviewed: 31. I. 2002. (NOTE: The following is excerpted from a longer article which was published in the February Honest Dog magazine. To learn more, scroll to the bottom of this review.) Since the tramp does not care where he is going, nor does he care very much about the style of writing he espouses in his travelogue, In prefacing a conversation when the tramp is unaccompanied on the road, Cela gives us a possible hint as to his work method. Sometimes, he writes, he passes the time "by talking to myself in order to practice the complicated art of never, ever reaching an agreement." Cela mastered the art of bending himself into any position, so as to come to no resolution whatsoever as to what is right and what is wrong. For Cela then, the art does not lie in the revelation of truth, however beautiful or gruesome that truth might be, but rather we are to believe that Cela himself is the art. He is the double-jointed performance artist in a one-man show, and as readers we are simply supposed to marvel at his dexterity rather than glean any understanding as to how we should or should not see ourselves and the world around us. As one might expect from the author of books like "La Familia de Pascual Duarte" and "La Colmena", Cela is particularly fascinated by the cruelty of others. He frequently gives examples of man's indifference or unsympathetic attitude toward his fellow man in this work. Numerous nasty vignettes and insulting exchanges are inserted every few pages, almost as if Cela purposely sought to paint the Castilian people as being cold and unsympathetic to the outstretched hand of others. For example, there is this exchange between a shepherd and a village girl whose paths cross over a bridge as he is bringing in his sheep, while she sings to herself on her way home:

A literary storm broke in Spain yesterday as one of the country's most distinguished authors - the Nobel prizewinner, Camilo Jose Cela - was accused of regularly using ghostwriters for most of his career. The allegations made by Tomas Garcia Yebra include not just the recent works of Cela, who died in January at 85 and won his Nobel in 1989, but stretch back to his early classics. In these books, according to Mr Yebra, the ghostwriters supplied the plots and characters which Cela transformed into his own prose style. "Cela was a great prose writer with an exquisite style but plots and arguments were not his strong point," he said. Mr Yebra named two ghostwriters, Marcial Suarez and Mariano Tudela, who, he claimed, had worked on the prize-winning books. Both men, themselves writers, are also dead. Suarez had also provided Cela with the stories and characters for one of his most famous books, 1951's The Hive, according to Mr Yebra. Mr Yebra, a journalist, made his discoveries while researching his book, Undoing Cela.

    Nobel laureate Camilo Cela dies
MADRID, Jan 17: Nobel literature prize winner Camilo Jose Cela, a giant of the Spanish literary world, died of heart failure in a Madrid clinic on Thursday, the clinic said.
Cela, who was 85 and had used a pacemaker for several years, had been taken to Madrid's Cemtro clinic a few days earlier complaining of breathing difficulties.
Tributes poured in from fellow writers and politicians for the outspoken and irreverent Cela, who crowned a long and prolific career by winning the Nobel prize in 1989.
"We have lost probably the most universal writer Spain had in the second half of the 20th century," Spanish Culture Minister Pilar del Castillo told national radio. His books "express a depth of feeling and, above all, his roots deep in (Spanish) conflicts," he told Reuters by telephone from his home in Spain's Canary Islands. "All this is put to work, finally, by a language that is really extraordinary and dazzling."
Cela was best known for his 1942 novel "The Family of Pascual Duarte" - about a peasant unable to suppress a killer's instinct instilled in him by a hostile environment.
