The Nobel Prize for Literature
Founded in 1900, the Nobel Foundation was created through the will of Alfred Nobel, a Swedish engineer who invented dynamite and held over 350 patents. Nobel also write poetry and drama and seriously considered a career as a writer. The Foundation presents annual awards in the fields of Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Economics, Peace, and Literature.
Unlike most literary awards, the Nobel Prize is not associated with a specific work or book. Rather, in accordance with Nobel's will, the Prize for Literature is given to the person who "shall have produced in the field of literature the most outstanding work of an idealistic tendency."

1/29/02 Susan Sontag's literary archive purchased by UCLA
The library of the University of California at Los Angeles has purchased the literary archives of author Susan Sontag after an anonymous alumna donated $1.1 million. Among the archives are the sixty-nine-year-old author's essays, film scripts, personal library and letters, including correspondence between Sontag and notable literary figures like Jacques Derrida and Philip Roth. According to an article in the Los Angeles Times , financial considerations and a lack of space in Sontag's Manhattan apartment prompted the sale, which is considered a literary coup for the university. UCLA librarian Gloria Werner called Sontag "one of the most important American literary figures of the second half of the twentieth century." Sontag burst onto the intellectual scene in 1966 with her essay collection

LIVING A 25-year-old travel book written by Nobel laureate Camilo Jose Cela is getting a new run. The University of Wisconsin Press plans to reprint the book by Cela, the Spanish writer whose violent images sprang from the civil war. In the 25 years since the book "Journey to Alcarria" was originally published, it has sold 2,000 copies. The final copies of the original printing were sold Thursday, the same day Cela won the Nobel Prize for literature. Press director Allen Fitchen said Monday plans have been made to reprint 2,000 to 5,000 copies of "Journey." "The world was caught by surprise that the Nobel Prize went to Cela," Fichen said. "We were caught by surprise that we had been a publisher of a Nobel Prize winner. We're delighted." HIRSHS;10/24 NKELLY;10/25,16:06 NAMES25 1997 Globe Newspaper Company Home

King Juan Carlos gave Cela [L] a book prize in 1996
Spanish writer Camilo Jose Cela, winner of the 1989 Nobel Prize for literature, has died. The 85-year-old died in Madrid from respiratory and coronary failure, the hospital Centro in the Spanish capital said. With his first novel, published in 1946, Cela became a leader of a straightforward style of writing, called tremendismo, which clashed with the lyricism that had characterised writers of the previous generation in Spain. His best known novels are The Family of Pascual Duarte and The Hive, both of which were adapted into successful films. 'Compassion' Cela's work was riven with violent, grotesque images drawn from his country's civil war, which killed more than a million people. When he was awarded his Nobel Prize, the Swedish Academy praised Cela's "rich and intensive prose, which with restrained compassion forms a challenging vision of man's vulnerability". It said The Family of Pascual Duarte was the most popular work of fiction in Spanish since Miguel Cervantes's masterpiece, Don Quixote, was published, nearly 400 years previously.
