Es nombrado "Forense de Honor" por la Asociación Nacional de Forenses, por la descripción de una autopsia en su novela Mazurca para dos muertos. El 7 de diciembre se le concede el Premio Nacional de Literatura por Mazurca para dos muertos.
En febrero se publica el Nuevo viaje a la Alcarria. Recibe la Creu de Sant Jordi y el Libro de Oro de los Libreros Españoles (CEGAL).
El día 27 de marzo "por la elevada calidad literaria de su abundante y universalmente conocida obra y por su significación singular
dentro de las letras hispanas de este siglo, en las que ha influido considerablemente", Camilo José Cela obtiene el Premio Príncipe de Asturias de las Letras. Es nombrado Ciudadano de Honor de la ciudad de Tucson (Arizona), con motivo del viaje que el escritor realizó hacia ese lugar en busca de datos y notas para una novela que fue,
finalmente, Cristo versus Arizona.
En el mes de febrero se publica Cristo versus Arizona. Recibe, junto a otras ilustres personalidades entre las que se encuentran Torrente Ballester, Neira Vilas o María Casares, la medalla Castelao de la

  • Great Spanish Novelist Cela Dies

    Spanish writer Camilo Jose Cela , winner of the 1989 Nobel Prize for literature, has died.
    The 85-year-old died in Madrid from respiratory and coronary failure, the hospital Centro in the Spanish capital said.
    With his first novel, published in 1946, Cela became a leader of a straightforward style of writing, called tremendismo, which clashed with the lyricism that had characterized writers of the previous generation in Spain.
    His best known novels are " The Family of Pascual Duarte " and " The Hive ," both of which were adapted into successful films.
    'Compassion'
    Cela's work was riven with violent, grotesque images drawn from his country's civil war, which killed more than a million people.
    When he was awarded his Nobel Prize, the Swedish Academy praised Cela's "rich and intensive prose, which with restrained compassion forms a challenging vision of man's vulnerability." It said " The Family of Pascual Duarte " was the most popular work of fiction in Spanish since Miguel Cervantes's masterpiece, "
