Ernst Boris Chain was born on June 19, 1906, in Berlin, his father, Dr. Michael Chain, being a chemist and industrialist. He was educated at the Luisengymnasium, Berlin, where he soon became interested in chemistry, stimulated by visits to his father's laboratory and factory. He next attended the Friedrich-Wilhelm University Sir Frederick Gowland Hopkins , for whose personality and scientific ability he came to have a great admiration.
In 1935 he was invited to Oxford University where he worked in the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology , becoming, in 1936, demonstrator and lecturer in chemical pathology. In 1948 he was appointed Scientific Director of the International Research Centre for Chemical Microbiology at the , Rome. He became Professor of Biochemistry at Imperial College , University of London, in 1961, which position he still holds.
His research has covered a wide range of topics in addition to those already detailed. From 1935 to 1939 he worked on snake venoms, tumour metabolism, the mechanism of lysozyme action and the invention and development of methods for biochemical microanalysis. In 1939 he began, with

Chain, Sir Ernst Boris
Chain (b. June 19, 1906, Berlin, Ger.d. Aug. 12, 1979, Ireland), German-born British biochemist who, with pathologist Howard Walter Florey (later Baron Florey), isolated and purified penicillin (which had been discovered in 1928 by Sir Alexander Fleming ) and performed the first clinical trials of the antibiotic. For their pioneering work on penicillin Chain, Florey, and Fleming shared the 1945 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine Chain served as the director of the International Research Centre for Chemical Microbiology, Superior Institute of Health, Rome, from 1948 until 1961. He then joined the faculty of Imperial College, University of London, where he was professor of biochemistry (1961-73), professor emeritus and senior research fellow (1973-76), and fellow (1978-79). Chain was knighted in 1969. In addition to his work on antibiotics, Chain studied snake venoms; the spreading factor, an enzyme that facilitates the dispersal of fluids in tissue; and insulin.

Why could Electrical and Electronic Engineering shatter your illusions? Who saved the Leaning Tower of Pisa? Who has held both the Water and Land Speed records? ... Who invented the time machine? 1. Why might Chemistry give you the blues? Chemistry @ Imperial Two famous students of the Royal College of Chemistry, later part of Imperial College, were William Perkin and Patrick Linstead.  Perkin discovered the aniline dye mauveine and was the founder of the British dyestuffs industry.  Patrick Linstead first elucidated the structures of the phthalocyanine dyes of which Monasool Blue is an example.  One of the South Kensington halls of residence is named after him. up 2. Why could Electrical and Electronic Engineering shatter your illusions? Dennis Gabor, inventor of the hologram, joined Imperial as a Reader in Electronics in 1949, and remained at the College until his retirement in 1967.  He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1971.
