III. Alfred Nobel And The Nobel Prizes Alfred Nobel is the man who invented dynamite. He is better known today, however, as the man who established some of the most prestigious prizes in the world. Born in 1833 in Stockholm, Sweden, Nobel from his youth had a dream of inventing an explosive so devastating it would deter humans from making war. Instead, his invention made war easier. Though he was a Swede by birth, he was very much an international man, being educated in St. Petersburg, Russia, where his family moved when he was a child. In St. Petersburg, he studied with private tutors, particularly showing interest in chemistry and languages. He mastered Swedish, Russian, English, French, and German. At the age of 17 he began two years of educational travel throughout Germany, France, Italy and to the United States. Then at the age of 19 he became a chemist, working with his father in St. Petersburg. The family returned to Sweden and in 1863 he was a chemist in his father's explosives factory at Heleneborg near Stockholm. In 1864 Nobel received a patent covering detonating charges and percussion caps. Called "The Nobel Igniter," it was to be called at a later time "the greatest discovery ever made in both the principle and practice of explosives." His 1866 invention of dynamite revolutionized mining, road building and tunnel blasting. In 1875 a later improvement was patented as blasting gelatine. In 1887 he patented ballistite, the first of the nitroglycerine smokeless powders. This was to serve as the basis for cordite which was eventually to change the use of firearms.

CanadianBritish Politicians and World Leaders Sir (Joseph) Austen Chamberlain British Politician - Nobel Peace Prize W-910.Chamberlain (1863-1937) was a Nobel Peace Prize -winning politician. His father Joseph was an important politician, and his half-brother Neville became prime minister. Austen served as chancellor of the Exchequer secretary of state of India (1915-1917), and head of the Conservative party (1921-1922). He advanced to the foreign secretaryship (1924-1929), sharing the 1925 Peace Prize with Charles G. Dawes , for the Locarno Pact and mutual defense and arbitration treaties that he negotiated. This is a very nice , beautiful dark blue fountain pen ink signature on a large light beige album page. He has signed, "With pleasure, Austen Chamberlain, 17-11-31." There is a red decorative border drawn around the autograph, but this can matte out if desired. Also attached is a small typed name which can also be easily matted out. Slight paper "scuff" top right corner when a small piece of tape was removed. This is negligible and barely noticeable. All-in-all this is quite attractive. A handsome, dated autograph of a great British statesman..................................... I Want to Make a Purchase Return to Home Page Autographs for Sale List of links

Nobel Peace Prize
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. The Nobel Peace Prize is one of five Nobel Prizes bequested by the Swedish industrialist and inventor Alfred Nobel . Four of the five prizes are awarded in Stockholm each year, but Nobel had stipulated in his will that the Peace Prize could not be awarded in Sweden. Instead the Norwegian capital of Oslo was chosen as the award site and a Norwegian Nobel Prize Committee is appointed to select the laureate for the Peace Prize. According to the will of Alfred Nobel the prize should be awarded "to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between the nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses".
