Chamberlain, Sir Austen (1863-1937), British minister of foreign affairs, 1924-29. Austen Chamberlain, the famous Chamberlain family's political heir, became involved with the Conservative Party, serving as its leader in 1921-22. He was elected to Parliament in 1898. Chamberlain entered the Balfour cabinet in 1902 as Postmaster General. He held the post of chancellor of the exchequer in 1903-05 and 1919-21. From 1915 to 1917 he served as the secretary of state for India. Chamberlain was a minister without portfolio in the War Cabinet during World War I. He was made foreign secretary in 1924 and served in this capacity until 1929. Chamberlain was one of the main architects of the Locarno Pact of 1925 and a champion of Germany's entry to the League of Nations. For these efforts, he was created a Knight of the Garter and shared the Nobel Peace Prize with the American reparations expert, Charles Dawes, in 1925. Chamberlain remained in Parliament until his death, but never achieved the prized office of prime minister.
