Antonio, Nicolas
Bibliotheca Hispana appeared in two parts ( Nova Vetus , 1696). The first is a vast bibliography of Peninsular and Spanish colonial writers after 1500, with critical evaluations. The second, a history of Peninsular literature from the reign of Augustus to 1500, marks the emergence of modern bibliography and the transformation of literary history into a scholarly discipline. A second edition (1788; vol. 1 of the Nova dated 1783), with additions from Antonio's manuscripts, is still consulted.

Phillips, Stephen (b. July 28, 1864, Summertown, Oxfordshire, Eng.d. Dec. 9, 1915, Deal, Kent), English actor and poet who was briefly successful as a playwright.
Perrine, Charles Dillon
Perrine, Charles Dillon (b. July 28, 1867, Steubenville, Ohio, U.S.d. June 21, 1951, Villa General Mitre, Arg.), U.S. astronomer who discovered the sixth and seventh moons of Jupiter in 1904 and 1905, respectively. In 1904 he published a calculation of the solar parallax (a measure of the Earth-Sun distance) based on observations of the minor planet Eros during one of its close approaches to the Earth.

The Judging for the 1958 Nobel Prize in Physics was Tainted
by Michael "Tuck" Tokaruk
Reports coming out of Stockholm, Sweden late Monday confirmed what the American public has known for the past 44 yearsÐ the judging for the 1958 Nobel Prize in Physics was tainted. Nobel Institute official Sven Larkenson called the revelations "an embarrassment to the physics guys and their credibility...and I guess our credibility, too." The judge in question, 89 year-old French scholar, Jean-Jacques ("J.J.") Lacroix has been ordered to appear before the United Nations General Assembly for a judicial hearing scheduled Thursday. A team of three Russian physicistsÐ Pavel Alekseyevich Cherenkov, Il'ja Mikhailovich, and Igor YevgenyevichÐ were awarded the 1958 Nobel Physics Prize for their work in discovering and interpreting "The Cherenkov Effect". However, it was quite obvious to all those following the Nobel Ceremony that the pair of Mikhailovich and Yevgenyevich were nothing more than glorified coffee-fetchers for Cherenkov. The tainted French judge felt pressured to give all three scientists awards, apparently because of an agreement reached between France and Russia in 1956. The deal outlined a conniving scheme to give the three Russians the Physics Prize in exchange for a French victory in the 1957 Literature Prize. And so, the two Russian judges who helped deliver the Nobel Prize for Literature to French writer Albert Camus in 1957, are also coming under fire. Unfortunately, both judges passed away in the late 1970s after extensive battles with Chicken Pox and could not be reached for comment.

Born 15 July 1928
American microbiologist who recognized the existance of the organisms Archaea as a third domain of life, distinct from the previously recognized two domains of bacteria, and life other than bacteria. On 2 Nov 1977, his identification of methanogens, a form of life dating back some 3.5 billion years, was reported from the University of Illinois. Woese had long studied the evolutionary track of DNA and RNA. In 1976, he was approached by his colleague Ralph Wolfe, who presented a group of methane producing organisms. Woese studied their RNA and recognized their lack of the entire oligonucleotide sequences. Methanogens are found in oxygen-deficient environments, and mostly obtain their energy by reducing CO and oxidizing hydrogen, and releasing methane. Leon Max Lederman
(EB) Born 15 July 1922
American physicist who, along with Melvin Schwartz and Jack Steinberger, received the Nobel Prize for Physics in1988 for their joint research and discovery (1960-62) of a new subatomic particle, the muon neutrino. Neutrinos are subatomic particles that have no detectable mass and no electric charge, that travel at the speed of light. The discovery of muon neutrinos, a new type of neutrino, was followed by discoveries by other scientists of a number of different "families" of subatomic particle. Together, they now form a standard model, a scheme that has been used to classify all known elementary particles. He was director of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Ill. (1979-89).

JULY 28 - BIRTHS Gerd Faltings
(source)
Born 28 July 1954
Gerd Faltings is a German mathematician who was awarded the Fields Medal, the highest honour that a young mathematician can receive, in 1986, primarily for his proof of the Mordell Conjecture which he achieved using methods of arithmetic algebraic geometry. He has also been closely linked with the work leading to the final proof of Fermat's Last Theorem by Andrew Wiles. In 1983 Faltings proved that for every n > 2 there are at most a finite number of coprime integers x, y, z with xn + yn = zn. This was a major step but a proof that the finite number was in all cases did not seem likely to follow by extending Falting's arguments.
However, Faltings was the natural person that Wiles turned to when he wanted an opinion on the correctness of his repair of his proof of Fermat's Last Theorem in 1994. Baruch S. Blumberg Born 28 July 1925
American research physician whose discovery of an antigen that provokes antibody response against hepatitis B led to the development by other researchers of a successful vaccine against the disease. He shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1976 with D. Carleton Gajdusek for their work on the origins and spread of infectious viral... Jacques Piccard Born 28 July 1922
Jacques (-Ernest-Jean) Piccard is a Swiss oceanic engineer, economist, and physicist, who helped his father, Auguste Piccard, build the bathyscaphe for deep-sea exploration and who also invented the mesoscaphe, an undersea vessel for exploring middle depths. Made deepest ocean dive ever at 35,800 feet in 1960.
