Churchill, Sir Winston Homme d'Etat britannique (Woodstock, comté d'Oxford, 1874 — Londres, 1965).

Sir Winston Churchill
British Prime Minister Back to Home One of the greatest statesmen in world history was Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill. Churchill reached the height of his fame as the heroic prime minister of Great Britain during World War II. He offered his people only "blood, toil, tears, and sweat" as they struggled to keep their freedom. Churchill also was a noted speaker, author, painter, soldier, and war reporter. Winston Churchill was born on November 30th 1874, at Blenheim Palace to a British father, Lord Randolph Churchill, and an American mother, Jennie Jerome. Churchill did not have a happy childhood. He loathed school and refused to learn Greek as a foreign language, however, he did have an extroardinary memory. He loved to read history and poetry, and was fascinated by soldiers and battles. He enrolled at Sandhurst Military Academy, and graduated in 1894. He was commissioned to the 4th Hussars. He was sent to the South African War as a correspondent for The Morning Post, and was captured by Boers in 1899. His escape made him an overnight celebrity. His political career began in the year 1900, when he was elected to parliament as a conservative. In 1904, he became a liberal. When the liberals came to power in 1905, he became the Under Secretary of the Colonies. In 1908, he married a charming young woman, Clementine Hosier, and was appointed Home Secretary. In 1911, he was appointed 1st Lord of the Admiralty, and in 1915, Minister of Munitions under David Lloyd George. Subsequently he became Secretary of State for War and Air (1918-1921), and Secretary of State for the Colonies (1921-1922), before losing his job when Georges coalition government fell in 1922.

"I am easily satisfied with the best," he said. His life was a metaphor for excellence as he overcame a serious childhood stutter to become one of his century's greatest orators. He was a noted writer as well, awarded the 1953 Nobel Prize for Literature. He inspired millions. "I may not be the lion," Churchill proclaimed, "but it was left to me to give the lion’s roar." President John Kennedy described how Churchill skillfully "mobilized the English language and sent it into battle." Prime Minister in 1940, Churchill led with imagination and boldness. "I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat," he committed in his gravely voice to the House of Commons as he held the country together against Hitler's "monster of wickedness." "Never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never in nothing, great or small, large or petty never give in except to convictions of honor and good sense," Churchill confidently said, a tribute to

"When that ship slips down the ways in the final year of this century, its name will ride the seas as a reminder for the coming century of an indomitable man who shaped our age, who stood always for freedom, who showed anew the glorious strength of the human spirit," President Bill Clinton said Nov. 29, 1995, when he announced to both Houses of Parliament that the U.S. Navy destroyer would bear Churchill's name.
While Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill (1874-1965) was best known for his courageous leadership as British prime minister during World War II, he was also a formidable political thinker, soldier, pilot, farmer, bricklayer and orator. When he retired from the House of Commons in 1964, Churchill had spent over six decades in public life, a career that ran from the last great British cavalry charge to the nuclear age. He also won the 1953 Nobel Prize for Literature.

M. Enero 24, 1965; Londres.

- Sir Winston Churchill Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill, 1874-1965, British statesman, soldier, orator, journalist, politician, biographer, historian, and scholar. There are legion and colossal volumes written by and about Churchill, so I will be brief here about who he was, and try to explain throughout this book why his words made the impact they did. For all kinds of interesting information about him go to http://www.Winston Churchill.org Son of Lord Randolph Churchill of England and Jennie Jerome Churchill of the United States. Educated at Harrow and Sandhurst. I remember with fondness the movie, "Young Winston," which tells of his flamboyant stint as a reporter, and his coverage of the Boer War. He had been hired by The Morning Post to cover the War in the South Africa (1899). His accounts of his capture and imprisonment by the Boers and his escape raised him to the forefront of English journalists. He held many offices in British politics, colored with brilliant triumphs and miserable failures. During one of his less favored, and out of office periods, he was one of the few who bellowed unheeded forewarning to the world: Nazi Germany was rising. A warning which went mostly ignored by the world. When World War II broke out (September, 1939), Neville Chamberlain appointed him first lord of the admiralty. The following May, when Chamberlain was forced to resign, Churchill became Prime Minister.

Biography of
Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill (Nov.1874- Jan.1965) (back to start)
Sir Winston Churchill was born on 30th November, 1874, in Blenheim Palace, Woodstock, as a son of the conservative party leader Lord Randolph Churchill.
He passed an unhappy and sadly neglected childhood, redeemed only by the affection of his devoted nurse. At the third attempt he managed to pass the entrance examination to the Royal Military College Sandhurst. He became an officer and in 1895 he entered the 4th Hussars.
After leaving the army in 1899 Churchill became a war correspondent in India and the Sudan. While reporting the Boer War he was taken prisoner by the Boers but made headline news when he escaped.
On returning to England he wrote a book ( ''London to Ladysmith'') about his experiences. In the 1900 General Election Churchill was elected as the conservative Minister President for Oldham. Now he was in Parliament and in a position to make his own way in politics.
After reading ''Poverty, a study of town life'' he became a supporter of social reforms, and in 1904, after some differences with his party leaders, Churchill decided to join the Liberal Party. In 1906 he begann his ministerial career in the new Liberal government as Undersecretary of state for the colonies and two years later, in 1908, he became President of the Board of Trade, with a seat in the Cabinet. Following the 1910 General Election Churchill got Home Secretary. During this time he introduced several reforms to the prison system, including the provision of lectures and concerts for the prisoners and the setting up of special after-care associations to help the convicts after they had served their sentence.
