Barbara McClintock (1902-1992) in 1944 became the third woman elected to the Academy. In the 1940s and 1950s McClintock's work on the cytogenetics of maize led her to theorize that genes are transposable they can move around on and between chromosomes. McClintock drew this inference by observing changing patterns of coloration in maize kernels over generations of controlled crosses. The idea that genes could move did not seem to fit with what was then known about genes, but improved molecular techniques of the late 1970s and early 1980s allowed other scientists to confirm her discovery, and consequently she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1983 . This made McClintock the first American woman to win an unshared Nobel. McClintock was born in Hartford, CT, and obtained her undergraduate and doctoral degrees at Cornell University's College of Agriculture. From 1931-1933 she was supported by a fellowship from the National Research Council; from 1941until her death she worked at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York. Among the many honors awarded her was the National Medal of Science, the US government's highest science award, which she received in 1970. 1983 Nobel Laureate in Medicine
for her discovery of mobile genetic elements.

(1902.06.16 Hartford, Conneticut- 1992 ) Kísérlete: DS-t tartalmazó homozigóta domináns (színes szemû) kukoricát, homozigóta recesszív (fehér szemû )kukoricával keresztezett.Az elsõ utódnemzedékben színes szemû, fehér foltos, néha fehér alapon színes pettyes kukoricák jelentek meg. Feltevése szerint a kromoszómatörést okozó DS vándorol a kromoszómába, mutációt okoz a vizsgált tulajdonság génjében. 1951-ben közli a mozgó genetikai elemekre vonatkozó feltevésének elsõ bizonyítékait. Munkáját egyedül tervezte, egyedül kivitelezte kísérleteit, egyedül írta tudományos közleményeit, s egyedül kapott Nobel-díjat 1983-ban a mozgó genetikai elemek fölfedezéséért.

Lab Allergies Force Some Scientists To Take Cover Or Change Careers
By Rex Dalton Date: November 12, 1990 Doctors warn researchers not to ignore adverse reactions to animals and other menacing specimens SAN DIEGOWho would have thought that a rabbit could send a scientist to the emergency room? Or that butterfly scales would force an entomologist to wonder about his future as a scientist? Or that a Nobel laureate could be seized by a sneezing fit brought on by the subject of her award-winning work? The truth is, it's actually quite common for scientists to suffer allergic reactions to their own research specimens, according to Lanny J. Rosenwasser, a Denver physician and immunologist. This is especially so when lab animals are involved. Rosenwasser estimates that anyone handling laboratory animals has a 25 to 35 percent chance of developing an allergy to that creature, whether it be a cockroach, mouse, rabbit, or squirrel monkey. The reactions can be sudden and severe, forcing the scientists to don face masks and protective clothing, or they can develop gradually over time. In some cases, researchers eventually have been forced to abandon their areas of study altogether. As common and potentially dangerous as these allergies are, however, the problem has not yet attracted much concern in the scientific community. "I suppose this is because it is not seen as a major health problem," says Rosenwasser, the head of allergy and immunology research at the National Jewish Center for Immunologic and Respiratory Medicine in Denver.

Nobel Prize
It is the Swedish- Norwegian foundation ( which is situated in Stockholm). It was founded in 1900 year like a fulfillment of the wish of Alfred Nobel's testament. All income of this foundation is devoted to grant of equal-value international prize. They are awarded every year in five domains:
in the realms of physics and chemistry the prizes are granted by Royal Swedish Academy of Science
in the realm of medicine the prize is granted by Royal Swedish Institute of Medicine and Surgery.
in the realm of literature the prize is granted by Swedish Academy of Literature in the realm of economy the prize is granted by Swedish Bank - for activity for the world-wide peace is granted by Norwegian Nobel's Committee (attached to Norwegian Parliament.
