From 1901 onwards Nobel Prizes have been awarded in Chemistry Physics Physiology or Medicine Literature (66) and Peace (46), and since 1969 also in Economics (17) to 391 scientists, economists, peace activists/organisations and writers from today's EU member states or candidate countries. During their journey across Europe, our two Spring Students, Caroline and Marlene , have also tried to find out, who they were, when they were awarded the prize, which countries they came from and where they lived when they received the prize. In the list below you will find reference to the latter in brackets. All links below go to the marvelleous site of the Swedish Academy . So let me invite you to follow our two Spring Students on another, this time not political but scientific, trip across our continent. Sir John Douglas Cockcroft
British physicist born in Todmorden , and educated at Todmorden Secondary School. Eldest of five sons of a cotton manufacturer with a weaving mill at Walsden His brothers entered the family business, but he studied mathematics at Manchester University. Nobel prize for Physics in 1951. In 1939, he became Jacksonian Professor of Natural Philosophy at Cambridge, and Director of the Royal Society Mond Laboratory. During the Second World War, he was moved to radar research, looking at the defence of naval vessels. In 1944, he was moved to atomic research. Cockcroft believed that the use of nuclear power was for peaceful roles and after the Second World War he was appointed Director of the Harwell Atomic Energy Research Establishment 1946-58, and was knighted in 1948. He was awarded the KCB in 1953, and the OM in 1957 Sir John Cockcroft Malcolm Bull 2002 / MBTraining@aol.com / Revised 26th September 2002 / mmc145 / 3

William Howard Stein was an American biochemist who, along with Stanford Moore and Christian B. Anfinsen, was a cowinner of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1972 for their studies of the composition and functioning of the pancreatic enzyme ribonuclease. J. Hans D. Jensen

Born 25 Jun 1907; died 11 Feb 1973
Johannes Hans Daniel Jensen was a German physicist who proposed the shell theory of nuclear structure of protons and neutrons grouped in onion-like layers of concentric shells. He suggested that the nucleons (protons and neutrons) spun on their own axis while they moved in an orbit within their shell and that certain patterns in the number of nucleons per shell made the nucleus more stable. Scientists already knew that the electrons orbiting the nucleus were arranged in different shells. Jensen's model of the nucleus won him a share of the 1963 Nobel Prize in physics (with Maria Goeppert- Mayer, who arrived at the same hypothesis independently in the U.S.; and Eugene P. Wigner for unrelated work.) Throughout the 1950s, Jensen worked on radioactivity. Rupert Wildt Born 25 Jun 1905; died 9 Jan 1976
